I understand the UTMA regulatings prohibit minors from directly owning equities. Do these same limitations implement to gold, silver, oil, aluminum, steel, etc.? If not, what would you suggest to invest in, and is this scheme better than laying out capital in such other means as mutual funds, bonds, or cash market accounts? ThanksI'm not sure I understand your statement ?UTMA regulatings prohibit minors from directly owning equities?. A UTMA account CAN own stocks. I suppose that technically the minor doesn't own the stock since it's the account's ?trustee? (normally a parent or guardian) that has legal obligation for the account, but the account is for the gain of the minor and may legally only be used for things that gain the minor (e.g. college tuition, summer camp, etc.) so for all practical intents it's the same thing.I don't recognise of any rules that prohibit ownership of things like gold and silver, though I suppose it's possible. I've never read the UTMA rules word for word and have never invested in commodities in my kids' UTMA accounts. I personally would question the wisdom of buying into things like that now anyway. Nearly all commodities have risen dramatically in price over the last year or two. While a sure amount of that is basic supply/demand, I think a lot of it is speculation (i.e. persons looking to make a quick buck buying into the latest fad investment). We've seen what happened with tech stocks with regards to 7 years ago and real estate over the past couple years. I think there's a good prospect that the same thing (a price collapse) could take place in the commodities that have run so far up in price. As soon as there's a amount of time of declines, I suspect that a heap of of the speculators will bail out driving prices down even more. I personally think commodities are a high peril investment at this point. As for what the best thing to invest in, that will vary depending on how soon the cash is needed, danger tolerance, etc. Over long periods of time, however, stocks have with respect to history provided the most eminent returns of any asset class, so that's my preferent investment for long-term gains. I will read this one again! By Sarah Wells I utterly loved this book! I finished it in a day! I couldn?t put it down, even at work. I love Patterson?s books, and Karp is an added plus! 2 of 3 people found the following review helpful.
One Fantastic Collaboration By Rude Cactus Hand me a Patterson novel and I?ll read it. Hand me a Karp novel and I?ll devour it. Kill Me If You Can is a outstanding marriage of two solid writers. While it follows the typical Patterson formula, there?s something fresh and stimulating in the writing, likely due to Karp?s unbelievable talent. I hope this will be the basi of numerous collaborations while also highlighting what a gifted writer Karp is. In the mean time, be sure to check out Karp?s Lomax & Biggs novels ? The Rabbit Factory, Blood Thirsty, Flipping Out and Cut Paste Kill. See all 14 client reviews? |
