Los Angeles Independent Living | What is Blurps

SEO Articles Sponsored by Moe Tamani, the Internet Marketing Services Consultant

Especially in the city of how you look must be how you feel, those who age well in Los Angeles prefer independent living instead of a care facility when they get older Contrary to popular belief, most seniors aged 65 arent sick enough to require institutionalized care Only 6 percent of people over the age of 65 require skilled nursing home care The majority of the aging population live independently, in spite of any aches and pains, and supplement their needs by getting help from family, friends, volunteers and some assisted living community programs

There are constant transitions throughout life, and in an aging persons lifestyle, often signal that its time for the family to get involved in examining their elders housing needs This is a time of great adjustment Every study indicates that most elders want to remain in their own homes and communities as long as possible, even expressing wishes to die in their own home However, lack of proper planning often forces them out of their homes Moving, and even remodeling is a traumatic experience for anyone In order to keep them living independently as long as possible, you can minimize negative reactions to changes in our elders living environment by proceeding thoroughly and slowly, especially if your relative recently has experienced a major loss, or other serious stress

In the larger cities like Los Angeles, as well as in our new century, its outdated to assume that your only options are nursing home care or having your aging senior family member move in with you Unless your elder requires round-the-clock supervision and skilled nursing care, there are many other great choices to consider

Nonetheless, family caregivers may be reluctant to consider the nursing home options when they should The time may come when we do not have the skills and/or the stamina for independent living, and need to consider options so they receive the proper care Yes, the decision to place an elder in a nursing facility is a difficult one, but sometimes it is the only alternative It is not a question of whether institutionalized care is inherently good or bad The decision for this option should be based on medical treatment, preference of the family caregiver, financial resources, and the availability of quality facilities The move from independent living to a nursing home is a difficult decision for any one to make

There are many reasons seniors continue to live independently in their Los Angeles home, or whether they decide on a planned community or care facility Consider the following issues as you begin to think about your elders current and future living arrangements:

* Finances

* Home maintenance and housekeeping

* Access to family and friends

* Assistance with day-to-day tasks

* Social interaction and companionship

* Safety and security

* Climate

* Second-floor and basement access

* Interior and exterior wheelchair access

* Transportation

* Health insurance coverage

* Access to preferred doctor

* Familiar surroundings and community ties

* Places of worship

* Family history and memories

* Other residents

* Illness and dementia

* Employment

* Pets

To maximize the time for independent living in Los Angeles or any other city, be prepared to make simple home modifications that can enhance your loved ones comfort, safety and independence Helping your elder to age in place is a win-win situation for all!

Can the iPad and iPhone rescue the cloud?

May 27, 2011

The hype on the cloud is just as loud as the hype on mobile computing. Both appear to be gold rush destinations for vendors seeking to capitalize on all the stuff that buyers allegedly can't get enough of. But if you look at the numbers, you see that mobile is where the money is being made, while the entire cloud market pulls in about 1 or 2 percent of what mobile does.

It seems to me that the cloud needs to be rescued, and perhaps mobile ? la iPad, iPhone, and Android is the technology to do it.

[ Keep up on key mobile developments and insights via Twitter and with the Mobile Edge blog and Mobilize newsletter. ]

The numbers overwhelmingly point to mobile's bulging bank account
But first, let me detail the numbers. Cloud services brought in about $3 billion in 2010 from its three main components: infrastructure (IaaS), platform (Paas), and software (SaaS) offerings. In IaaS, Amazon.com's Amazon Web Services (AWS) made about $500 million in 2010, and Rackspace -- the No. 2 IaaS provider -- raked in about $100 million. SaaS did better: Salesforce.com pulled in $1.3 billion in 2010, with the other four major SaaS providers -- NetSuite, RightNow, SuccessFactors, and Taleo -- earning about $200 million each. Revenues for PaaS offerings -- exemplified by Salesforce.com's Force.com and Microsoft's Azure -- aren't broken out but are widely believed to be minuscule.

I'm not counting sales of so-called private cloud technology, as that means pretty much anything in a data center, which covers most of what IT's expenditures ($1.5 trillion on tech last year). Whether you think a private cloud is a real cloud or just marketing buzz for the same old server, storage, and network gear (using virtualization, of course!), it's money that IT would be spending anyhow. Even if you decide that virtualization spend should be counted as cloud spend, that adds "only" about $5 billion to the cloud total, bringing it to $8 billion.

Now to some real money: Mobile technology brought in $173 billion in 2010 from its major sources: $62 billion in 3G data plans, $99 billion in smartphone sales ($29 billion to Apple, $20 billion to Nokia, $15 billion to Research in Motion, and $9 billion to Samsung), $10 billion in tablet sales (almost all iPads last year), and $2 billion in app sales ($1.7 billion to Apple alone). Note that I'm not including iTunes and similar music, book, and video sales via mobile devices, as they can be accessed on both PCs and mobile devices. If you're curious, they added up to $8 billion, with $4.1 billion going to Apple and $3.3 billion going to Amazon.com, including for the Kindle hardware.

How the cloud can hitch itself to the mobile bandwagon
As these numbers show, when you look at the whole mobile market, the cloud appears downright sickly as a business. Maybe mobile can help. After all, what other computing platform is more dependent on the cloud concept than mobile?

Let's start with the obvious: storage. Although mobile devices have local storage, they're not anywhere near as capacious as PCs -- and a lot of that space is taken up by all your music. Mobile users should be helping drive the cloud storage business, to companies such as Box.net and Dropbox.

On the consumer side, Google is moving in that direction as well for its Music Beta service, and rumors are rampant that Apple plans an iCloud service that will merge its MobileMe storage/collaboration service with a new iTunes-in-the-ether service. In the not too distant future, you may have most of your data living on a personal storage cloud and a business storage cloud service for access anywhere by pretty much any computer or mobile device. Here's an opportunity for an Amazon.com to grow its IaaS business.

The Food And Drink Blog ? Easy Chicken Dhansak Recipe

The Dhansak originated from a community of people originally from what is now called Iran. It?s a meal that is traditionally preapred on Sundays since it can sometimes be a time consuming process to make.

The chicken breast recipe below contains fruit juice to sweeten the flavour, but the traditional recipes would never contain any fruits, and would be sweetened by pumpkins or butternut squash.

This meal can be ready within an hour, and will serve four people.

Ingredients:

4 chicken breasts, 300ml chicken stock, 200ml pure pineapple juice, 100ml mango chutney, 5 onions, 2 garlic cloves, fennel seeds, 50ml natural yogurt, ginger puree, tomato puree, 400g lentils, turmeric powder, mild curry powder, chilli powder, garam masala powder, fresh coriander leaves

Method:

1. To begin, make the onion puree. To do this simply peel and chop 3 onions into small pieces and add to a small pan of boiling water. When you are happy that the onions are soft remove the pieces from the water and blend them into a puree.

2. Follow the same method above with the lentils to make the lentil puree.

3. Next, add a couple of teaspoons worth of fennel seeds to a heated pan over a high heat. Toast them over the heat until they start to sizzle. Then add in some oil and the rest of the onion. Fry them until the onions are a fantastic brown.

4. Now for the curry paste. In a small bowl, add in 4 teaspoons of the curry powder, 2 teaspoons of turmeric powder and 1 teaspoon of chili powder. Mix together with a small amount of water and then crush in the garlic cloves and grate some ginger in. Mix again until you have a smooth paste.

5. Cut the chicken into 1/2? cubes. Add the paste to the pan and heat through, and then add the chicken in. Make sure the chicken is well coated in the curry paste.

6. Cook the chicken in the pan for a few minutes, and then pour in the pineapple juice. Then stir in the mango chutney.

7. In another bowl pour in the yoghurt, 2 tablespoons of tomato puree, and the lentil and onion puree made earlier and mix well.

8. Add the chicken stock to the saucepan and turn up the heat bringing it to a simmer. Pour in the yoghurt mixture and leave for around 15 minutes, stirring every few minutes.

9. After the time is up add a couple of teaspoons of garam masala, mix it through the curry thoroughly and leave for another minute or so.

10. Serve on warm plates with rice and naan bread, and garnish with roughly chopped coriander leaves.

Check Out These Healthy Sweet Treats! | Home-Family-Parenting Blog

Healthy desserts are fast becoming the easiest way to cut calories and break free from the high carbohydrate and high sugar desserts that are keeping us from being healthier. Realistically dessert is something that everyone wants from time to time.

Nearly everyone has a sweet tooth to some degree and ending a delicious meal with a sweet treat seems very natural indeed, especially at holiday and family gatherings.

There are a few ideas for sugar free and low carb desserts that are quick and easy solutions that anyone can make. These treats take very little time to make and use inexpensive ingredients. However, some contain sweeteners that contain no carbs, so if you suffer from irritable bowel problems when you eat these sweeteners, make sure you read the ingredients of any item that you use in a recipe.

If you?re a baker and you don?t like to explore new options on your own, there are several stand-by items that will be excellent dessert items for those who are cutting sugar, carbs, and calories. Low carb, no fat, and low cost dessert items such as sugar-free gelatin desserts offer you a lovely and light dessert that has a sweet and fruity taste sure to satisfy anyone. Top it with just a teaspoon of a non-dairy whipped topping and it makes a satisfying dessert that is sure to please. If you?re able to add a teaspoon of fresh fruit it becomes every more satisfying and a light parfait that is still low in calories and carbs can be attained.

Sugar substitutes like Nutrasweet can be used or one of the new sweeteners that are made from natural plant extracts. These can be used to create amazing desserts with no calories and lower alcohol sugar content.

Healthy desserts are typically simple. Things like berries or fruit with some extra flavorings make excellent healthy desserts. For example, add some fresh raspberries or pineapple chunks to some fat free yogurt. It?s easy to satisfy a sweet tooth with the combination of tangy and sweet combination and cut down on calories, fat, carbs, and sugar.

Bananas, sliced lengthwise and sprinkled lightly with cinnamon make a good dessert. The idea behind healthy desserts is to use fresh ingredients that are in season, usually fruit or berries and substitute them for other desserts that are rich and full of carbohydrates.

Sugar free desserts are often a bit more challenging to make especially if you are cooking for a person with diabetes because the fruit is full of a type of sugar which is bad for someone on a diabetic diet.

As you can see, desserts can be both healthy and delicious. Don?t be afraid to use your imagination and do some exploration.

Elbereth - Writer's Block: Bon app?tit!

I have two answers for this, one meal is lighter, and the other heavier.

My favourite place to eat ritually serves healthy fresh food in smaller portions.? If I could have my perfect meal there, it would be a cup of their amazing mushroom soup, followed by a squash salad, and a mini lavender vanilla cupcake.? Tea is a speciality there, so of course this sort of lunch couldn't do without.? Ice tea would be especially lovely in the summer.

On occasion, I like something a bit heavier, like something cozy in midwinter.? Mashed potatoes or German egg noodles, a perfect rosemary lemon rotisserie chicken or beef tenderloins with green beans.? To drink, none other than a good thick Belgian beer, Abbey Dubbel?? Dessert would be a gingerbread cake made by myself.

Entrepreneurship = Innovation = Growth | Banking and Money Business

Entrepreneurship = Innovation = Growth

To define entrepreneurship, we can say that appropriate resources are gathered to achieve a goal. The goals involve certain risks. These risks can affect an entrepreneurs? wealth and time. The ventures could be focussed towards many different outcomes. These ventures may support philanthropic ideas, environmental initiatives, profit, etc. Examples of entrepreneurship could be starting up a company like Microsoft, or a charity organization. An entrepreneur brings a new product or service to our economy. This means that a new idea or innovation is created.

Innovation determines there are new ways of creating value for consumers. Entrepreneurs strive to impress investors for support on new business ideas, these business ideas aim to add value for consumers. When there is innovation, we find new ways to improve the lifestyle of regular people. Consumers have better options to improve the quality of their lives. The same way Thomas Edison introduced the light bulb, we have entrepreneurs pitching ideas. Entrepreneurs in business want to keep doing this, simply because its the path towards starting out a company. By starting a business, growth and profits can eventually be established. This leads to a successful venture.

A successful business facilitates the internal and external environment. Not only is the company a great source for creating new jobs, consumers and contracting companies find use in the product provided. In other words, better efficiency is created in different places that support the product. This contributes to the gross domestic product (GDP). The GDP shows improvement in goods and services domestically. This is a good indicator of how well the economy is doing. When there is an increased GDP, the economy is doing well. In this case, there are better employment rates and citizens are happy with results. Innovation also helps trade, businesses may send their products out overseas or branch out globally. This is great for building relations with economies from other countries.

Since entrepreneurs contribute towards innovation, they are needed in the domestic system. The entrepreneurial lifestyle should be supported by the general public and the government. To have many entrepreneurs means potential for new ideas, products and services. It means potential for new business start-ups and business engagement. Entrepreneurship should be continuously funded by the government. By funding entrepreneurship, we are investing in future improvement and technological growth. In other words, globalization exists through entrepreneurial activity. Entrepreneurs lead a difficult task of gathering resources to fulfill a purpose. They not only have to find financial support, there is also the hard work needed in creating a business plan and making the appropriate decisions. Nowadays, entrepreneurs need to be persistent and stay focussed towards their goals. Most ventures don?t succeed, which is why its common for entrepreneurs to try many different ideas. It is important for entrepreneurs to receive all kinds of support during these rough patches. Our economy needs it.

Leading a ghostly, woozy romp through the streets of New Orleans, Kelli Schaefer hints at salvation in "City Morgue."

Song: "City Morgue"

Artist: Kelli Schaefer

CD: Ghost of the Beast

Genre: Folk-Rock

Like Sinead O'Connor, Kelli Schaefer possesses an almost otherworldly voice ?? a beguiling instrument that conveys clear-eyed beauty and truth, sometimes dropping its guard to reveal vulnerability and sometimes baring its fangs like a cornered animal. In "City Morgue," Schaefer shows her soft? side without losing her sense of danger. Leading a ghostly, woozy romp through the streets of New Orleans, she hints at salvation while promising disappointment.

"I will let you down" turns from a coy coo to a bold mantra, but it's impossible to resist the siren's call. Schaefer possesses the comfortingly eerie calm of someone equally at ease in total darkness and blinding light ?? and a voice capable of translating those experiences for the mortal realm.

Square Register and Card Case hands-on

It looks like Square's little headphone jack-connected credit card reader has some company. The mobile payment startup introduced two new additions to its unique stable of payment options in San Francisco this morning that do away with credit cards, paper receipts, and even the bantam reader itself (to some degree). First up is the Square Register, an app that allows merchants to accept payments by way of the card reader or through a card-less (no, it's not NFC) tab -- like, "put it on my tab" -- system, and uses Google-style analytics to keep track of payments, receipts, and trends. The second announcement, the Square Card Case, is a virtual wallet that holds a series of "cards," each relating to a participating outlet, that let you put your purchases on the aforementioned tab. Each shop has its own virtual credit card, and enables shoppers to make and track purchases with a single click of a button. We got a chance to give the setup a try, and it's just about as simple as Square would have you believe.

To get started, you make a regular, Square-enabled purchase at a participating store, at which point a text-message receipt is sent to your phone -- we skipped this step, as this was just a demo. Once set up, we were introduced to the Card Case, holding cards for the participating stores -- only 50 spots in five cities, for now -- and an "Explore Places" button that offers access to a directory of participating outlets. We selected a nearby cupcake stand, clicked "open tab" and picked our poison: a miniature red velvet cupcake, in this case. The merchant picked our name from a list of open tabs, charged the tiny treat to our card, and a receipt was promptly pushed our way. After the transaction was complete, we went back to the cupcake card in the Card Case, and there was the receipt. All in all it was a painless process, but, then, so is whipping out a real wallet to make a purchase. The new Square setup is available now at 50 different establishments in New York, LA, Saint Louis, San Francisco, and DC, and the company says it will curate the list of participating stores, much like Apple does apps.
