Rebney: Alvarez-Chandler III Almost Certainly Headed to PPV

After Bellator’s attempt to enter the pay-per-view market with “Rampage vs. Tito” fell apart, the promotion has some big momentum behind it thanks to the efforts of Eddie Alvarez and Michael Chandler. The highly regarded lightweights not only delivered an action packed scrap like everyone expected, but a lot of folks believe it equalled the “Fight of the Year” buzz their first meeting had. Clearly the brass at Bellator and Viacom have to be pretty, pretty pumped about that.

Since both fights have been thrillers and each man has defeated the other, obviously Bellator is going to move forward with a rubber match. The one fly in the ointment for fans who like free fights, however, is that the the rubber match almost certainly won’t be…Following the event, Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney was understandably asked if Alvarez-Chandler III will be featured via pay-per-view, and he stated (comments via MMA Junkie.com):

“Not unless I have my brains removed,” said Rebney. “I mean, please. How could you not?”

“I think part of the magic that they were able to create tonight was based on the fact that Ed had a long period off and was able to heal and recreate what he does,” Rebney furthered, while discussing when the fight could take place. “Michael got a lot of time off, and Michael had a couple of title defenses, but they were short-order title defenses (in which) he took no damage. But [the rematch is] the kind of fight that you’re going to need to take some time off. Once they’re both back at 120 percent, there’s nothing in the way of doing No. 3.”

So, there you have it. While it remains to be seen if Bellator can pull some decent PPV numbers with the bout, as there’s certainly no shortage of big stage MMA cards these days, the promotion might not have a lot of options. Although Alvarez and Bellator haven’t discussed any details pertaining to the agreement they reached to settle their legal battle, it’s been speculated the fighter is owed a PPV fight.
