Back to campaigning for Romney after uneven trip

(AP) ? Wrapping up a stumble-marred overseas trip, Mitt Romney pivoted quickly into a three-month stretch to the election on Tuesday with a new feel-good television ad. Aides simultaneously stoked speculation about his vice presidential pick.

The economy was Romney's primary text abroad as well as at home. "We could probably learn something from what's happening right here," the former Massachusetts governor said of Polish policies shortly before boarding his chartered jet for the flight back to the U.S.

Advisers accompanying him said he would resume direct criticism of President Barack Obama's record soon enough, after observing a mini-moratorium while on foreign soil. Yet a new television commercial suggested another immediate priority was to close a likeability gap in the polls.

Shorn of any criticism of Obama, the ad appears designed to introduce Romney to voters in battleground states who know little or nothing about his personal background except what they've seen and heard in unflattering commercials aired by Democrats.

In the ad, Romney speaks of his years in private business, in government and as the head of the Olympic Games in Salt Lake City a decade ago and says, "I want to use those experiences to help Americans have a better future."

In the final hours of his trip, in Warsaw, the Republican extolled the Polish economy as a model for the rest of the world in an era of slow growth or worse, and he simultaneously sought to limit the political fallout caused by comments he made earlier on a stop in Israel.

"The world should pay close attention to the transformation of the Polish economy" since the end of communist rule more than two decades ago, he said in a speech in the Polish capital city. "A march toward economic liberty and smaller government has meant a march toward higher living standards, a strong military that defends liberty at home and abroad and an important and growing role on the international stage.

'Rather than heeding the false promise of a government-dominated economy, Poland sought to stimulate innovation, attract investment, expand trade and live within its means," he added.

It was thinly veiled criticism ? one of several instances on the trip ? of the policies Obama has pursued while in office, and Romney was slightly less veiled in a Fox News interview. He did not mention that joblessness in Poland is over 12 percent, roughly half again as much as in the United States.

With just under 100 days until the election, the presidential race remains a tight one, likely to be decided by a relative sliver of undecided voters who live in eight or so states that remain competitive. Romney heads to one of them on Thursday, when he resumes traditional campaigning with an appearance in the Denver area.

His time to pick a running mate is dwindling, with the Republican National Convention set to open on Aug. 27 in Tampa, Fla. His campaign unveiled an app for smartphones that officials said would "serve as the campaign's first official distribution channel" for the news of his choice. Separately, Republican officials noted an announcement could come any day.

As for one of the controversies on his trip, Romney said in the interview with Fox before leaving Europe that he hadn't been speaking about "the Palestinian culture or the decisions made in their economy" in his remarks earlier in the week that prompted one Palestinian official to question whether his views were racist.

At a fundraiser with Jewish donors in Jerusalem, Romney had said their culture was part of what had allowed them to be more economically successful than the nearby Palestinians. He made no mention of the fact that Israel has controlled the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem since capturing them in the 1967 war, a presence that the World Bank and International Monetary Fund both say limits the economy's potential for growth there.

In Poland as on other stops, Romney ignored shouted questions from reporters about his comments on Israel and the Palestinians. Asked why the former Massachusetts candidate had responded to just three questions from American reporters during the trip, traveling press secretary Rick Gorka said, "Shove it."

The aide later called some journalists to apologize.

Aides later said that despite any mistakes made during the trip, there was little evidence they would materially affect the campaign.

"I don't think that will go down in history as very important," said Stuart Stevens of possible missteps.

Nor is it likely that Romney will suffer politically from any clash with the news media, nor suffer damage among Jewish voters for comparing Israelis favorably with the Palestinians.

While Obama's aides and campaign staff missed no chance to pan Romney's performance, it remains unclear whether the former Massachusetts governor achieved his goal of demonstrating to the public an ability to stride confidently across the world stage.

Of evident concern is polling indicating that while the voting public generally believes Romney has better economic policies than Obama, it views the president in more favorable terms personally.

In an NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll completed on July 22, some 49 percent of registered voters said they had positive feelings toward Obama while 35 percent said the same about Romney.

In the same survey, 43 percent of registered voters said Romney would be better at dealing with the economy, while 37 percent said Obama would.

The new Republican ad was a joint venture of the Romney campaign and the Republican National Committee

"We believe in our future, we believe in ourselves, we believe the greatest days in America are ahead," Romney says as American flags flutter.

With the race near deadlock for months, ad spending was soaring in battleground states and non-existent in others.

The Obama campaign also unveiled a new commercial during the day, part of what detailed advertising records show is a heavy investment in the range of $30 million during August.

In the Fox interview, Romney suggested the news media were to blame for the culture controversy, saying some will 'try to find anything else to divert from the fact that these last four years have been tough years for our country.'

There were other uneven moments on what Romney and his aides had planned as an illustration of his ability to handle the world stage. In London, he drew a tart response from Prime Minister David Cameron after wondering aloud whether the British had adequately prepared for the Olympic Games now under way.

And in a speech in Jerusalem he declared that the city is the capital of Israel, even though the U.S. has its embassy in Tel Aviv and maintains a policy that the city's designation is a matter for negotiations between the Jewish state and Palestinians.

Not surprisingly, he got nothing but criticism from the president's surrogates.

Robert Gibbs, a senior campaign adviser, called the trip "an embarrassing disaster" for Romney. "He both offended our closest ally and triggered a troubling reaction in the most sensitive region of the world. He certainly didn't prove to anyone that he passed the commander-in-chief test," Gibbs said.

Author Q&A: Tom Lazarus, ?The Last? ? Write On Online

Tom Lazarus, author of The Last Word: Definitive Answers to All Your Screenwriting Questions, has written more than 100 hours of television programming, has had nine feature films made from his screenplays, and directed five feature films. He has taught screenwriting at various universities, and is currently teaching at UCLA Extension, Writers Program.

Why did you write The Last Word?
I?ve been teaching Advanced Screenwriting Workshop and Advanced Rewriting Workshop at UCLA Extension, Writer?s Program, for many years and have found that the workshop process, based on the writing of the screenwriters in class, is invaluable in terms of teaching screenwriting.

These real world screenwriting problems and their solutions are wonderful teaching tools. So, I?ve gathered the best of my script notes to screenwriters and compiled them in The Last Word. With over 100 chapters, the book really delivers a ton of helpful information not found in other books.

What was your process for writing it?
I reviewed all my notes, identified the best of them, and wrote them up. And then, it was a matter of writing and rewriting to get the writing in the book in shape. I can?t tell you how many drafts it took, but it was a lot.

What was your favorite part of writing The Last Word?
The deal is: I love writing, so the whole process of coming up with the idea, gathering the material, then writing and rewriting the bejesus out of it was all fun. And of course, finishing a project and doing my best gives me a great sense of accomplishment. The fact that it was received so positively by Michael Wiese and Ken Lee of Michael Wiese Productions made the journey worth it.

The greatest challenge?
To make the teaching moments entertaining, to the point and insightful.

In what ways was writing a book different than writing a screenplay? Any similarities?
Writing instructional books and screenplays are very different, of course, but the main difference is The Last Word is written in my voice, versus screenplays where there are many characters? voices. And, screenplays are not the venue for educating, as books are.

On the other hand, the similarities are many: each has a beginning, middle and end. Each has to hook the reader and keep them engaged. And each has to be perfect in their presentations.

What are the three biggest mistakes new screenwriters make and how can they fix them?
1. The biggest mistake I find is that screenwriters send out their scripts before they?re finished. Some writers get to THE END and think their finished. They?re not. Other writers write two drafts and think their finished. They?re not. The screenwriter?s job is to send out a perfect script, fully realized, every scene and every piece of dialogue maximized and perfected, written the best the screenwriter can write. Most screenwriters don?t do this. The thing is: their competition, writers like me, spend the time and effort to send out perfect scripts.

2. Another common mistake is trying to fit their writing into some preconceived formulaic approach to screenwriting. The three-act structure is antiquated. The standard 30-page first-act, comprised of set up and back story and exposition before the story starts, is in my opinion, old-fashioned. Today, movies start faster. Readers and audiences want to see the movie they came to see from the very beginning, rather than slogging though thirty minutes of unneeded set up.

If I were to cut the first 30 pages of the screenplays I read, I?d be more right than wrong. The lesson? Get to your ?A? story right away. Any exposition and back story and set up can be done after you?ve hooked your reader/viewer.

3. Sending out scripts that aren?t perfect. Typos, wrong format, misspellings are all disrespectful to the reader and the signs of an amateur. Make sure your script is perfect before sending it out.

Additional advice for non-fiction writers?
At some point, you?re going to have to shift your loyalty from the truth to what you?re writing. Sometimes the truth just doesn?t work well enough. Your loyalty has, ultimately, to be with your script ? as the reader/viewer doesn?t compare your script to the truth. They read the script and it either works or doesn?t.

Additional advice for screenwriters?
Writing is mathematical ? the more you write on a script the better it gets. After years of writing, I?ve gotten pretty good at it, yet it still takes me ten drafts to get to a rough draft, then I get notes, then it takes another ten drafts for the script to be ready to be sent out. Stigmata, a big hit for me, took 40 drafts before it finally sold. It was optioned four times before selling, with drafts for each option holder.

What do you know now that you wish you knew at the beginning of your career?
I wish I knew that being a screenwriter was going to hurt ? the rejection, the unemployment, the insecurity and the fact that when you get to be around 40 it becomes increasingly difficult to get employed. Don?t get me wrong, I love being a screenwriter. To be able to spend my time spinning yarns is a fabulous gift and it thrills me to be a screenwriter. That I?ve had success is a real bonus.

Business to Business Cause Marketing from AmpliVox - blog*spot

Most cause marketing faces the consumer. You can imagine why. The lady who buys, say, printer paper where you work almost certainly is under the obligation to find the best price she can. A pink ribbon on a box of paper almost certainly is unmoving to corporate purchasing types if it also carries a premium price or if it doesn?t meet spec.

But business to business cause marketing does take place, even if it?s not common. This is my 890th post, and in nearly six years I?ve mentioned business to business cause marketing less than a dozen times.??

Add one more.

AmpliVox, an Illinois company which makes and sells portable sound systems and lecterns, does a form of non-transactional cause marketing to benefit the fights against both breast cancer and prostate cancer.

Not surprisingly perhaps, this came about when the human element was reintroduced to the B2B equation; AmpliVox?s owner, Don Roth, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2008. Listen for Roth?s part of the story when you watch the video on the left.

Shortly after his diagnosis Roth and his team developed two new versions of its polyurethane Pinnacle lectern, one in pink for breast cancer awareness and one in blue for prostate cancer awareness. AmpliVox donates the appropriately-colored podiums? which have handles and casters for easy moving? to every prostate or breast cancer group or event. AmpliVox covers all costs including shipping. The donation is for the lectern only. Any added microphones, amps, speakers or graphics would be an additional cost to the organization.

Roth says why AmpliVox did this, but is there also a business case to be made for this donation? I think there is.

First of all, we can safely assume that AmpliVox has driven out all the costs it can from making and shipping its pink and blue podiums. But even if it?s cheap for AmpliVox to produce, it isn?t no cost.

The main reason, it seems to me is that it gives AmpliVox a way to distinguish itself from competitors. And, it gives the company and its employees an ongoing story to tell... I learned about AmpliVox?s pink podiums at the bottom of a press release in the ?About AmpliVox? paragraph at the bottom of the release. The release was about an unrelated product.

If these seem like small advantages remember that Big Ass Fans, the company that makes super-sized ceiling fans mainly for industrial use, was doing just fine, but no better than that under its original name, HVLS Fan Company. The name change brought Big Ass Fans out of obscurity. (With its evocative name and donkey mascot, Big Ass Fans is now also an active merchandiser of its brand. Profits from its ?gear? store benefit Habitat for Humanity, local food banks in Lexington, Kentucky, veteran?s organizations and the Longhopes Donkey Shelter).

Providing pink and blue podiums gratis could certainly do the same for AmpliVox.

Vatican Newspaper Takes on Melinda Gates and Nestle | Women of ...

L?Osservatore Romano, the Holy See?s official daily newspaper, has gone on the offensive against wealthy philanthropic institutions such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Nestle for using their millions to provide?third world women with dangerous forms of contraception and breast milk substitutes.

Vatican Insider is reporting that the rare salvo was launched on the front page of the Saturday edition in an editorial by Giulia Galeotti entitled ?The Risks of Philanthropy. Galeotti defines Melinda Gates as being ?slightly off the mark and confused? as well as ?misinformed? in her plans to spend the next eight months, and 450 million Euros, on research into new birth control methods and improved access to contraception. These new ideas will be tested on third world women, primarily those living in Africa.

Speaking about her initiative to CNN, Mrs. Gates confided the difficulty she was facing as a Catholic ?believer? in a Church that prohibits the use of artificial contraception. Galeotti?s article takes issue with Gates? idea that the Church promotes the death of women and children because of their ?misogynous? opposition to contraception, calling the accusation ?unfounded and cheap.? Instead, she points out that? the Church ?agrees with natural birth control methods, that is, with natural methods based on reading the signs and messages sent by the body.?

The article points out that ?in some parts of the world? the Billings method ?is seen as a double disadvantage because since it is a simple method that is easy to adopt, women, including the illiterate among them, use it independently and consciously, without the need for mediation.?

As Galeotti states: ?The unforgivable original sin inherent in this method is that it is a solution that is completely free. This makes it highly unpopular in the pharmaceutical industry which makes huge profits from the administration of chemical contraception. And this will be guaranteed through Mrs. Gates? philanthropic actions.??

But that?s not the only issue with which the Vatican newspaper addressed. It also rebuked Nestle for its controversial and dangerous breast milk substitute campaign. As L?Osservatore explains: ?The multinational company notoriously and in a cunning and improper manner supplied African women with free packs of dried milk for their newborn children. These lasted just enough time for the mothers to lose their natural milk. Mothers were then forced to purchase the dried milk, lured by advertisement campaigns which presented breast feeding as barbaric and the artificial method as the modern and civilised alternative; the campaign was furthered through various forms of psychological pressure exercised by elusive doctors and nurses. A need was therefore created in the name of charity and with profit in mind.?

Nestle, which holds about 50 percent of the world?s breast milk substitute market, claims that malnourished mothers are unable to breast feed their infants, even though health organizations say there is no evidence to support these claims.

Babies who are bottle-fed are up to 10 times more likely to develop gastro intestinal infections, but in the Third World, where clean water is hard to find, can make these substitutes much more dangerous and even deadly.

Boycotts have been launched against Nestle, and a petition campaign that acquired nearly 25,000 signatures was organized by the Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute (C-FAM) and presented to Melinda Gates on the opening day of a summit on her birth control initiative that she held in London earlier this month. The petition asked her to be open to other points of view on the matter of world poverty rather than to listen only to those who see artificial contraception as the answer.

Thoughts on race relations under a black president

How some in the U.S. view race relations nearly four years after the nation elected its first black president, Barack Obama:

"I don't know that his election made me feel differently about America because I have always believed that America is a place of great promise. However, his election did show me, and probably more importantly my daughter, that she really could grow up to be president like we often tell her." ? Karl Douglass, Columbus, Ga.

___

"I think it helped Americans get over their anxiety about race on the one hand, but since race has been declining in significance for decades, I'm not sure that it did anything more than confirm an established trend. ... Race just isn't what it once was a factor in determining life's chances." ? Linda Chavez, chairman, Center for Equal Opportunity.

___

"The lasting change is that the possible has become tangible. The question is whether we can follow it up with other candidates that can perform. But we can never, ever be told we can't do it again, or that it's an impossible dream." ? Rev. Al Sharpton.

___

"A lot of people I talk to can't understand why a man who's half-white and half-black is so anti-white." Ed Cattaneo, Cape May, N.J.

___

"It just seems that people in general ? some friends and family, a lot of people online ? have begun saying more blatantly racist things since Obama became a real contender for the presidency. Even beyond that, I've heard people become more vocal about frustrations they have with issues we tend to link to race ? immigration, welfare, hate crimes. His presidency seems to have pushed us all into talking about race and racism more. I see that as a good thing because we need to talk about it to solve it, but I know quite a few people who are sick of those discussions and blame him for all of it." ? Ashley Ray, Chicago

"It's the power of being. It's the power of his presence and the fact that you look and you see a person with brown skin in the White House." ? William Smith, executive director, Center for Race Amity

Speed Reading Improves Comprehension - blog*spot

Some people find that they cannot pay attention and have a tendency to daydream when they have gone through three or four pages without remembering a word. One cure for this is to stop reading and deliberately seek some distraction, then return to what you were reading with renewed attention. Get up and walk around, get a coffee, draw a picture, count your pocket change - anything. Then pick up the document again and take up from where you left off. No-one can tell you exactly what to do if your mind wanders when you read, because to some degree this problem is an individual one which you must work out for yourself. The important thing is to do something about it, not just tell yourself, as so many people do: "I can't concentrate".

Perhaps the best general advice is: Do not mix play and work. When it is time to work, work hard. Apply yourself to your task and keep going as long as you can give the job full attention. You should be able to read for at least an hour or two without interruption. When you begin to feel that you are not getting as much out of your reading as you ought to, rest for a while. But if there is more work remaining to be done, make the rest period short. It is surprising how quickly you can refresh your mind by turning to something entirely different for a few minutes. It does not take long to get your mind out of a rut, and when you return to the report or book, you will be alert and ready to go at it with a mind refreshed.

What is critical is your reading speed however. If you read too slowly you give your brain the chance to wander on to something more interesting - especially if what you are reading is boring! So learning to read fast with effective levels of concentration and comprehension is a far better use of time than wandering along at a slow reading speed, allowing all sorts of other thoughts to distract you.

If this suggestion does not solve your problem, there is another thing you can do. Form the habit of reading in the same place each time you read. Make this place, wherever it may be, in the office or at the desk in your study, a place for "concentrated" reading. Write your reports and fill out your crossword puzzles somewhere else. After you have tried this for a week or two, you will find that your habits will begin to work for you, which does not mean of course, that they will take over the whole process. There is still the matter of will power.

Modern Family Cast Strikes New Deal

The cast of Modern Family has finally reached a salary agreement and will resume production on the hit ABC show. Word on the street is the lawsuit has been dropped and things will soon be back to normal for the all those involved.   As you may or may not have been aware Ed O?Neill, Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Sofia Vergara, Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson were looking to get a salary hike before the show started production on season four. Earlier this week things got pretty intense when the above named stars filed a lawsuit to void their original seven-year contract deal. If that wasn?t bad enough for a very short time the crew was even refusing to show up for a table read. The later however was resolved and in a good faith move, Ed, Julie, Ty, Sofia, Eric and Jesse did sit down at a table read on Thursday. Deadline is reporting that new deats of the deal reached included a salary increase for all plus syndication rights. According to the site the above names except Ed O?Neill were originally earning about $50,000 per episode, O?Neill was earning about $100,000 per episode. As for the new [...]

Only traditionalist ABC can save Anglican church, warn primates

Only traditionalist Archbishop of Canterbury can save Anglican church, warn primates
THE worldwide Anglican Church risks a permanent split unless someone committed to traditional values is chosen as the new Archbishop of Canterbury, the leaders of 55 million churchgoers have warned

By John Bingham, Religious Affairs Editor
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/religion/
July 26, 2012

In a major intervention in the selection process, an alliance of archbishops and bishops from four continents has written directly to the selection committee urging them to choose someone prepared to halt a drift towards liberal values on issues such as homosexuality.

The next Archbishop must be willing to "uphold the orthodoxy of the Christian faith" in order to secure the "future and unity" of the church "at a foundational level", they say in a letter seen by The Daily Telegraph. Only someone with an understanding of the more traditional views of Anglicans in Africa and elsewhere and the ability to gain their "respect" would be acceptable they add.

The warning comes in a letter to Lord Luce, the chairman of the Crown Nominations Commission, which is selecting the next Archbishop, by the leaders of the Church in the so-called "Global South", who met earlier this week in Singapore. Their intervention is likely to be viewed as a boost to the chances of the Dr John Sentamu, the Archbishop of York, being selected for Canterbury, as a figure well-regarded in Africa and elsewhere. In addition to being the leader of the Church of England, the Archbishop of Canterbury is the titular head of the estimated 80-million strong Anglican Church worldwide.

Despite its historic ties to England, it is increasingly dominated by the fast-growing churches primarily in southern hemisphere. Most southern provinces still hold firmly to more traditional doctrines but some branches of the Church elsewhere, particularly in North America, have steered a more liberal course in recent years.

The splits were laid bare four years ago when a third of the bishops boycotted the 10-yearly Lambeth Conference in London in protest at the American church's decision to ordain its first openly homosexual bishop, Gene Robinson of New Hampshire. Since then the split has only become more entrenched.

Earlier this year an attempted unity pact on which Dr Rowan Williams staked his authority was rejected in the Church of England itself. Following the announcement of Dr Williams's retirement, leaders of African and Asian churches have privately voiced fears that their views are being ignored in a selection committee dominated by white, liberal-leaning Britons.

Earlier this month Bishop Mouneer Anis, the leader of the Church in the Middle East and North Africa, warned of a "colonial" approach to choosing the new Archbishop. In the letter, signed by 17 primates, they make clear that, as leaders of what is now the majority of the Anglican church, they "expect to be consulted".

"At a time when the Christian faith faces challenges from other religions as well as secular worldviews, the new Archbishop of Canterbury must be committed to uphold the orthodoxy of the Christian 'faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints'," they write, quoting a phrase from the New Testament.

In order to act as "Guardian of the faith" the new Archbishop must be able to enforce unity "especially on issues that have led to the present crisis in the Communion", they add.

"The new Archbishop of Canterbury should have the experience and cross-cultural sensitivity to understand the concerns and conflicts in the worldwide Communion," they add. "He has to be able to communicate effectively and gain the respect and confidence of, his fellow primates in the Global South."

But last night one senior figure in the Church of England warned that the global split could now be too deep for the new Archbishop to bridge. "Whoever it is I don't think one man can achieve it really because the splits are so deep," he said.

5 Tips for Composing a Press Release a Journalist Will Actually ...

Press releases are an integral aspect of any company?s marketing plan. Often cast aside as too expensive or time-consuming, press releases can actually be relatively simple to compose and extremely beneficial to enhancing any brand. Think of them as your gateway to free publicity.

The key to writing an effective press release is to provide information that is relevant to your target audience and interesting enough to engage a potential readership. In other words- you need to think like a journalist. The best way to start your press release is by asking, ?Who is my target audience, and why do they care about this???Once you have answered that, use these 5 tips to assist with the composition of your press release.

Write your Headline First

Okay, a real journalist would never write a headline before writing an article. However, when it comes to PR writing, it is important to focus in on a single message or you risk bombarding a journalist with too many ideas. Craft a headline that is catchy and indicative of exactly what the press release is about. If you can?t fit your point into a headline of about 10 words, then you?re trying to cram in too many ideas. Pick one and run with it.

Answer the 5 W?s

Every journalist is taught write articles that answer five simple questions: Who, What, When, Where and Why (and-when applicable-How). Look at any news article and you will see that the writer has addressed the majority of these questions within the first paragraph. This should be no different in a press release. By enticing your reader early on with basic facts, they will be encouraged to read the remainder of the article.

Of course it is not always possible to answer all five W?s in just one paragraph, but you should try. You?ll make a good impression on the journalist reading your press release by providing him or her with as much information in as few words as possible.

Keep it Short and Sweet

A press release should be 500 words?at most.?Keep it limited to one page, including all additional contact information and boilerplate blurbs. No one wants to read a novel about your company. Not yet anyway.

No Quote, No Story

More often than not, press releases are sent out without a single quotation from a source. This is unfortunate because most journalists?believe?that if there isn?t a quote, there isn?t a story. ?If you haven?t had the opportunity to interview someone yourself, then you should take care to provide a name (with contact information) of a source that could speak with the journalist about your story.

Think About the Readers

Writing an effective press release is all about making a journalist?s job as easy as possible. Press releases should be tailored to individual publications and written specifically for audiences that would be interested in an article about your business. Avoid using industry jargon and sales pitch buzzwords. Readers will feel more engaged if you speak to them directly, and journalists will be more likely to read and publish press releases that don?t sound too promotional.

Think About the Journalist

You should take care to ensure that you are properly researching the publications you are submitting to, and that your press release will fall into the correct hands once it gets there. It doesn?t take much effort to find the contact information for a particular section editor, and it will increase your chances of getting published.

Journalists get hundreds of press releases a day, so make an effort to personalize each email you send. Add a personal note, tell him or her why you think he or she might like your product/business, or compliment a previous published work. Journalists are human too, and everyone loves a bit of flattery.

These tips should help with getting you thinking about the content of your press release. Just remember to keep your writing simple and focused in on one key point. Thinking like the journalist who will read your press release is essential to getting you published.

White House lowers growth forecasts, brightens jobs picture

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House cut its outlook for U.S. growth in 2012 and 2013 on Friday, hours after data showed the economy grew at a tepid pace in the second quarter, raising concerns about a slowdown that could mar President Barack Obama's re-election chances.

In its semi-annual budget review, the White House said it expected gross domestic product to rise 2.3 percent this year and 2.7 percent next year - less than the 2.7 percent and 3.0 percent growth projections it made in February.

"The economy still faces significant headwinds that have held down growth and limited gains in employment," Jeffrey Zients, acting director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, said in a statement accompanying the review.

But the White House brightened its forecast for unemployment - one of the key barometers of Obama's economic leadership - to a 8.0 percent rate this year and 7.7 percent next year, from its first estimate of 8.9 percent in 2012 and 8.6 percent in 2013.

It also said the deficit would be slimmer this fiscal year - from October through September - than first anticipated, at $1.211 trillion instead of $1.327 trillion and be slightly wider than first projected in fiscal 2013. "Over the next decade, the White House said cumulative deficits would be $240 billion lower than it forecast in February."

The mid-session review, like the original White House budget proposal released in February, assumes Obama's economic and job growth proposals will be enacted despite the stark partisan divisions in election-year Washington.

Zients said it also "reflects the administration's belief that Congress can and must enact a comprehensive and balanced deficit reduction package" to avoid mandatory spending cuts that are due to take effect in January.

Kent Conrad, a North Dakota Democrat who chairs the Senate Budget Committee, said after the mid-session budget review was released that lawmakers needed to be ready to compromise to avoid damaging the economic outlook.

"The solution must include a comprehensive and balanced long-term deficit reduction plan. That can only happen if both sides agree to move off their fixed positions," he said.

FISCAL FIGHT

Obama's 2013 budget proposal was not passed by Congress, where Republicans controlling the House of Representatives oppose raising taxes and Obama's fellow Democrats who control the Senate want to collect more revenue alongside spending cuts.

An agreement struck last August to avert a sovereign default set spending levels for this year. Another fight is brewing over tax hikes and spending cuts slated for the end of 2012, a convergence of timing referred to as the "fiscal cliff."

Next week, the House is expected to vote against an Obama proposal to raise taxes on families making more than $250,000 a year. The Senate has backed the plan, which would extend tax rates begun under Republican former President George W. Bush for middle-class families for another year.

"If the president is serious about helping rebuild this economy, he will work with Republicans to stop these tax hikes and reform the tax code to create a better environment for private-sector job creation," House Speaker John Boehner, the top Republican in Congress, said in a statement on Friday.

Earlier on Friday, the Commerce Department said U.S. gross domestic product expanded at a 1.5 percent annual rate between April and June, the weakest pace of growth since the third quarter of 2011.

The federal budget was a searing political issue last summer, when a standoff between Democrats and Republicans over deficits and taxes brought the country to the edge of sovereign default and led to a credit rating downgrade.

Friday's weak second-quarter growth figure and continued concerns about U.S. unemployment are major political worries for Obama's campaign ahead of the November 6 election, which depends on a sense that the economy is improving.

A CBS/New York Times poll published last week showed 39 percent of respondents approved of Obama's economic leadership, while 55 percent disapproved. That represented a change from April, when 44 percent approved of the presidents' economic stewardship and 48 percent disapproved.

Sprint's Motorola Photon Q LTE is coming 'very soon' (update)

Sprint's Motorola Photon Q LTE is coming 'very soon' update

During Sprint's earnings call, CEO Dan Hesse revealed that Motorola's Photon Q, the company's latest LTE "world phone" is coming "very soon." The Photon Q is believed to be the Android 4.0-running QWERTY-slider you can see in the image above, but now that the company's head has let the cat out of the bag, we expect more details to roll around very shortly.

Update: Sprint's PR engine has kicked into gear, offering the deep dish on the new handset. It's a super-specced edition of last year's Photon 4G and will indeed offer a QWERTY-sliding experience on Ice Cream Sandwich. Beneath the 4.3-inch ColorBoost display you'll find a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, an 8-megapixel camera and NFC as well as Motorola's Smartactions application to help users extend battery life and anticipate your daily routines. Pricing and availability will be announced within the "next few weeks," but given how excited Dan Hesse sounded, we can't imagine we'll be waiting too long.

Should we turn the roles into NPCS?

Should we get rid of the extra roles and then find our own love interest?

Or should we do something else?

Free love interest would be pretty alright as long as some of the girls aren't homophobic or anything. I was kind of hesitant with my post since I didn't know Pepsi or Coke's names. :/
