China Defends Limits on Rare Earths Exports

China on Thursday defended its limits on exports of rare earths, after major trading partners sought litigation through the World Trade Organization (WTO) in a months-long dispute. "China's export restrictions on rare earths are aimed at protecting environmental resources and people's health, not the protection of domestic industries," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei told reporters. "In light of rare earth resources, market supply, demand and consumption, we will continue to practice management over the mining, production and export of rare earths." The European Union, the United States and Japan on Wednesday asked the WTO to form a panel to resolve a dispute over China's export restrictions on rare earths after earlier consultations through the trade body failed. In March, those trading partners claimed China was unfairly choking off exports of the commodities to benefit domestic industries. China produces more than 90% of the world's rare earths, which are used in high-tech equipment from iPods to missiles, and has set output caps and export quotas on the coveted resources. China has previously defended its practices, saying it aims to protect the resources and the environment as part of an effort to promote sustainable development. China also said last week its regulation of the rare earths industry was in line with global trade rules.

Pollutants could pose health risks for 5 sea turtle species

Thursday, June 28, 2012

Researchers at the Hollings Marine Laboratory (HML) and four partner organizations have measured for the first time concentrations of 13 perfluoroalkyl compounds (PFCs) in five different endangered species of sea turtles. While PFC toxicology studies have not yet been conducted on turtles, the levels of the compounds seen in all five species approach the amounts known to cause adverse health effects in other animals.

PFCs are man-made compounds that have many uses including stain-resistant coatings, fire-fighting foams and emulsifiers in plastics manufacturing. They have become widespread pollutants, are detectable in human and wildlife samples worldwide, infiltrate food chains, and have been shown in laboratory animals?rats, mice and fish?to be toxic to the liver, the thyroid, neurobehavioral function and the immune system. The PFCs most commonly found in the environment are perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA).

Located in Charleston, S.C., the HML is a collaboration of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the College of Charleston and the Medical University of South Carolina.

"In our experiment, we wanted to accomplish two goals," says NIST research biologist and study lead Jennifer Keller. "We wanted to get the first accurate measurements of the plasma blood concentrations of PFCs in five sea turtle species across different trophic [food chain] levels, and then compare those concentrations to ones known to cause toxic effects in laboratory animals. That way, we could estimate the potential health risks from PFC exposure for all five turtles."

The five sea turtle species studied were the green, hawksbill, leatherback, loggerhead and Kemp's ridley. Their preferred diets range up the food chain from the green's sea grasses and algae to the crabs favored by the Kemp's ridley. The researchers expected that the PFC concentrations would be higher in species that fed farther up the food chain, since their prey's tissues would probably concentrate the pollutants.

This was generally the case. Plant-eating green turtles had the lowest plasma concentrations for the majority of PFCs examined, especially PFOS. As expected, leatherbacks, loggerheads and Kemp's ridleys had progressively higher PFOS concentrations. Surprisingly, however, hawksbills?who browse low on the food chain, primarily on sponges?recorded the second-highest average concentration of PFOS and were the only species to have a detectable PFOA level. The researchers surmise that this may relate to the locations where the hawksbills forage, or it may suggest that sponges have unusually high concentrations of PFOS and PFOA.

In the second part of the study, Keller and her colleagues compared the plasma concentrations of PFOS that they found in the five sea turtle species with previously reported concentrations that were shown to have adverse health effects in laboratory animals. The results showed that hawksbills, loggerheads and Kemp's ridleys had PFOS concentrations approaching those linked to liver and neurobehavioral toxicity in other animals; levels in loggerheads and Kemp's ridleys approached those linked to thyroid disruption in other animals; and all five species had levels that approached those linked to suppressed immunity in other animals.

"Better understanding the threat of PFCs, especially PFOS, to sea turtles can help wildlife managers and others develop strategies to deal with potential health problems," Keller says. "Our study provides the first baseline data in this area but more research is needed?especially for hawksbills after seeing their unexpectedly high PFC exposure."

Researchers from the College of Charleston's Grice Marine Laboratory, NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service and the Loggerhead Marinelife Center also contributed to the study.

Florida Baptist 2012 Hunger Awareness Offering

Florida Baptist 2012 Hunger Awareness Offering

Jun 29, 2012
By STAFF

They come from different walks in life.?

An elderly woman just released from the hospital, bearing a cancer diagnosis is devastated by the turn of events in her life. Searching the eyes of those around her, she looks for somebody to care, someone to hold her hand and pray with her, someone to provide a few extra groceries at the end of the month when her Social Security runs low.?

A young couple unable to find jobs in harsh economic times wonders how they will feed their small children. Although they are willing to work, few jobs are available. Longing for some type of financial security in their lives, they ask how long they will have to endure such instability.?

Hispanic families working the fields of Ocala?s horse farms perform back-breaking manual labor few others would. They are isolated by language and culture. As they work to support the region?s economy, their own physical nourishment is lacking.?

They hope for more than words.

They come to Ocala?s Fellowship Baptist Church where they find a group of God?s faithful servants willing to embrace them in their difficulties, pray with them in their trials and provide food to help them make it through the month. They give more than words.

On the third Saturday of each month, Fellowship?s servant saints provide bags of food to their community?s needy. The bags contain canned food basics, bakery goods, meats and frozen foods; also diapers and baby formula when needed.?

?Our goal is to provide three days of emergency food,? said Cindy Mesa, director of the church?s community outreach. Per month, the congregation feeds as many as 100 families?some with as many as seven members and others who are single.

?No one is ever turned away,? she explained.?

?I?ve seen people here who are going through horrible times. I?ve seen burly, gruff men with tears streaming down their face. So many people are isolated and don?t know people care.?

Fellowship Church is personifying God?s Word as found in I John 3:17-18 as it instructs believers to love others with more than words.?

?If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.? ?? I John 3:17-18

Church members have embraced the effort, scouring food banks, gleaning produce from local fields, picking up left over foods from grocery stores and bakeries and even subsidizing costs from their own wallets. They give of their time to organize and distribute food, meet special needs, and touch lives.

?It is very humbling for a person to come here and receive food,? said Fellowship Pastor John Outlaw. ?But our church members establish a rapport with those who do. They love on them, pray for them and share the Gospel in many ways and actions.??

Fellowship?s food assistance program is the only one in this southwest corner of Ocala, explained the pastor. The region has been hard hit by the economy which climbed to as high as 16 percent unemployment in recent months before dropping to 11 percent.?

And as a result of their ministry, the church has seen professions of faith in Jesus Christ and welcomed families into the congregation.?

Each month, Fellowship receives $300 from Hunger Relief funds given by Florida Baptists to the state?s Hunger Offering. Since the ministry was begun six years ago the church has partnered with the Florida Baptist Convention.

The Convention subsidy does not cover the entire cost of the church?s ministry, but supports a much needed part of the church?s efforts.

They find Florida Baptists care.

During the past year, 125 Florida Baptist churches and associations received financial assistance from the Florida Baptist Hunger Offering. These funds totaled $131,435 and fed 161,896 people in 2011. As a result, 1,828 people made professions of faith and 521 were baptized into the fellowship of a local congregation.

When Florida Baptists give ?more than words,? their gifts to the offering go to alleviate hunger and causes of hunger in Florida, the United States and around the world. ?

Few can dispute the tragedies caused by hunger in the world today. Media outlets show the injustices as an estimated 1.2 billion poor people in developing countries live on $1 a day or less. Florida Baptists, through the International Missions Board?s World Hunger Fund, are making a difference.?

The fund is not supported by either the Cooperative Program or the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. Gifts enable missionaries to minister with ?more than words? by meeting human needs around the world through community development and disaster response.

In many ways, America is the land of plenty. But for 1 in 6 people in the United States, hunger is a reality. Many people may believe that the problems associated with hunger are confined to certain socio-economic segments, certain areas of the country, or certain neighborhoods, but the reality is much different.?

Right now, millions of Americans struggle with hunger. These are often hard-working adults, children and seniors who simply cannot make ends meet and are forced to go without food for several meals, or even days.?

Funds earmarked for the North American Mission Board help Southern Baptist churches within the United States demonstrate ?more than words? to the hungry in all 50 states.?

?

Southern Baptists? ?response

$239,641 was given by Florida Baptists to fight world hunger in 2011.

161,896 persons were fed through Florida Baptist hunger funds given to 125 Florida Baptist churches and associations to feed 162,000 hungry people.?

1,828 persons came to know Jesus Christ as Savior from Florida Baptists? hunger ministries; 521 were baptized.

304 World Hunger global hunger relief projects that affected entire communities were carried out in 2011 as a result of Southern Baptists giving $6 million to help feed millions around the world.?

5 million meals were fed to the hungry in North America through Southern Baptist hunger funds, resulting in 30,000 professions of faith.?

Huawei set to kick of TV advertising for the Ascend P!

Android Central

It looks like Huawei are going from strength to strength these days and it would appear that they are all set to start promoting the Ascend P1 Android smartphone on television.

The following video cropped up today on Huawei's YouTube channel and like many other smartphone commercials around at the moment it doesn't focus so much on the actual device but trys to portrait a message. The message here is quite clear:

The Ascend P1 is beauty meets brains -- proof that technology and good looks can go hand-in-hand.

I think Huawei are making a lot of sense here as the device certainly matches up to its image. With a dual-core 1.5GHz TI OMAP 4460 Cortext-A9 processor, measuring 7.69mm thin and 64.8 mm long, combined with a 4.3-inch super AMOLED 960 x 540 touch screen with Corning® Gorilla® Glass, an 8-megapixel BSI rear-facing camera and Dolby Mobile 3.0 + 5.1 surround sound technology the Ascend P1 is not a phone to be sniffed at.

You can check out the new TV commercial below and if you didn't see our full review of the device you can do so here.

Interesting gambling information:

  • Men and women tend to have different preferences in their gambling. Men are more likely to gamble in games such as blackjack and lotteries and women are more likely to engage in bingo and raffles.
  • The first games that we would recognize as modern roulette were introduced in Paris casinos around the end of the 18th century. In the mid 19th century the single zero game was invented in France, this reduced the casino's edge thereby increasing the odds of the player.
  • The second oldest casino hotel resort on the Las Vegas Strip was the Last Frontier and it opened in October of 1942. It had 105 guestrooms and the property was made to look like an old western town. The first casino hotel resort opened just 18 months earlier and was called El Rancho.
  • Many casinos in Nevada were financed by mobsters. Most notable perhaps was Las Vegas' Flamingo which was opened in 1947 by Bugsy Siegel.

Advocate Report:?American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting in Chicago, June 1-5, 2012

By Beverly Canin, BCAction Board Member

The 2012 ASCO Annual Meeting drew more than 31,000 attendees from 117 countries, including over 300 patient advocates representing approximately 100 advocacy organizations. In a poll of the 25,500 professional attendees, 25% of the respondents indicated breast cancer was a primary area of interest. Though the question allowed for more than one response, only 4% indicated a primary interest in cancer prevention/epidemiology, 4% in patient and survivor care and 2% in ethics. These numbers were striking to me.

ASCO prides itself on its educational programs to improve patient care, its frequently updated clinical practice guidelines, its informational booklets and fact sheets for patients, and its disease- specific symposia. Obviously, physicians are trained to treat patients and most are clearly looking for ways to improve their practices, but one still has to wonder?I certainly did?at such an apparent disconnect between professional interests and the issues that are so vitally important to patients.

T-DM1

Of the hundreds of presentations in workshops, plenary and poster sessions at ASCO, there are always headline grabbers ? the ?breakthroughs? as the media likes to call them. The most publicized results from this meeting was the EMILIA study, which show the efficacy of T-DM1, a monoclonal anti-body conjugate, in patients with HER2-positive locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer, though the progression free survival gain is modest and no overall survival gain is indicated.?

Childhood chest radiation and breast cancer risk

Other headline research related to breast cancer included findings that chest radiation in childhood for Hodgkin?s Lymphoma increases breast cancer risk in adults. A federal study which is tracking survivors of childhood cancers indicates that by age 50, these survivors have a breast cancer incidence rate of about 30 percent, about the same as women who carry a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation, which suggests they should undergo the same surveillance as the BRCA1/2 carriers.

Abraxane and Ixempra for metastatic breast cancer

Dr. Hope Rugo, director of breast oncology and clinical trials education at the University of California, San Francisco reported on a large Phase III clinical trial which showed that certain newer, more expensive drugs were no better and even more toxic than a cheaper, older drug, paclitaxel, that is used in patients with locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer. Median progression free survival was 10.6 months for those taking paclitaxel, compared with 9.2 months for Abraxane and 7.6 months for Ixempra.

Cymbalta for chemo-induced numbness and tingling

Another Phase III clinical trial by the Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB) showed that Cymbalta, which is used to treat depression, anxiety, and the pain caused by diabetes-related neuropathy, appears to reduce the numbness and tingling associated with taxane or platinum-based chemotherapy. The study found that 33 percent of the patients taking Cymbalta reported a 30 percent or greater reduction in pain scores compared with 17 percent of those on a placebo, with a daily 30mg dose not as effective as a daily 60mg dose.

?Overdiagnosis? Dilemma: Prescription for Change?

One very compelling presentation which did not make the news was ?Addressing the ?Overdiagnosis? Dilemma: Prescription for Change?, by Laura Esserman, MD. Dr. Esserman is boldly challenging the current paradigm which identifies and treats Ductal Carcinoma in Situ (DCIS) as cancer with prescriptions for lumpectomies, mastectomies and radiation. She calls for a new paradigm which recognizes the heterogeneity of lesions, acknowledges that the biology of lesions trumps size in determining progression, uses known facts to help distinguish indolent, low grade DCIS from high grade and introduces risk-based screening protocols. She recommends that low-grade DCIS be re-named and treated as atypia, which it closely resembles. She stressed the need for more clinical trials to determine treatment approaches, indicating that there is one underway for intermediate grade lesions and one being planned for high grade lestions. Dr. Esserman said in situ disease detection has increased 500%. She insists that cancer, not DCIS, should be the target of screening.

Genomic sequencing for cancer

Another take-away from the meeting is how genomic sequencing has impacted the way cancer is viewed, treated and researched. The entire genetic sequence of a cancer can now be analyzed and targeted therapies administered that weren?t possible a few years ago. Genetic analysis has allowed the identification of cancer subtypes and revealed the heterogeneity of cancers ? even within the same tumor. Treatments can now be targeted for the biology of the tumor rather than the site, with potentially far fewer side effects. But there are some big questions that accompany this progress:

  • Can the increasing cost to society of genetic research and targeted treatment be sustained??
  • Will insurance companies support it so that everyone will be able to benefit or will it be reserved for the few who can afford it??
  • Is this research leading toward prevention or just ?chronic disease? maintenance??

It?s essential that we consider these questions as we move forward.

?Designing Clinical Trials for the Elderly: A Road to What??

On a final note, because of work I do as an advocate with the?Cancer and Aging Research Group, I was asked to present the advocate perspective in an Educational Session on Designing Clinical Trials for the Elderly. I added the question ?A Road to What?? to my title, not with an expectation to answer the question, but with a hope to leave it indelibly in the minds of the researchers as they design clinical trials for the elderly and other populations.

I pointed out that the scientific jargon is ?translational research?, but advocates and patients simply want to know: ?How is this research going to help me or my children and their children?? We advocates think my participation was quite a coup because, as far as anyone knows, this is the first time an advocate has presented as faculty at the ASCO Annual Meeting.

I let the audience know that my talk was informed by my years of experience as a breast cancer advocate interacting with patients and survivors of all ages, advocates in other cancers as well as breast cancer, clinicians and researchers in a variety of settings. I explored some of the following questions:

  • Why have an advocate perspective?
  • What do we mean by advocate?
  • What do we mean by ?elderly??
  • How does this diverse population view clinical trials?
  • Why the skepticism and suspicion?
  • Can we overcome the skepticism?
  • What questions do the ?elderly? want asked in clinical trials?
  • Biomedical or behavioral ? does it make a difference?
  • What do we ?elderly? need from researchers and clinicians?
  • How do researchers find and work with advocates and advocate organizations?

I received many compliments about my presentation. The most rewarding comments came from two post doctoral students who thanked me enthusiastically, saying how much they appreciated hearing what I presented because they don?t learn anything like it in their courses.

Treatment for Her2+ Breast Cancer

By BCAction Staff

Breast Cancer Action has been a leading voice for breast cancer patients at the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for over twenty years. As the watchdog of the breast cancer movement we insist that any new treatment approved by the FDA is shown to extend life, improve quality of life or cost less than drugs currently on the market. We urgently need more effective, less toxic treatments that benefit women, not only Big Pharma?s bottom line.?

The recent treatment news we cover below addresses HER2-positive breast cancer, which accounts for less than a third of breast cancer diagnoses.?

Get more treatment news in our report-back from this year?s ASCO Annual Meeting.?

?T-DM1

T-DM1 was in the headlines after Genentech released results of their Phase III clinical trial of T-DM1 at the annual ASCO conference in June, and announced their plans to seek FDA approval for the drug. The focus of the media frenzy was only partly on the results of the study, showing slight improvement in progression-free survival of just over three months in women with HER2+ metastatic breast cancer. The primary media excitement was about the science behind the creation of this new targeted treatment.

T-DM1 enables targeted delivery of the chemotherapy DM1 to HER2+ cancer cells by linking it to the antibody trastuzumab. We believe the significance of this ?breakthrough??if it is that?is in the science of creating the antibody-drug conjugate.?

Breast Cancer Action has been following T-DM1 for a number of years and remains focused on real demonstrated benefit to patients, not media hype. ?In 2010, we successfully advocated for the FDA to deny accelerated approval of T-DM1 for metastatic breast cancer because Genentech?s data at that time relied on a Phase II trial that did not give sufficient information on the drug?s efficacy and safety.?

With the recent release of the Phase III data, we have some new evidence to consider in evaluating our position on T-DM1 when it comes before the FDA. We do not believe progression free survival is an adequate substitute for overall survival and the T-DM1 data on overall survival is not yet mature, although it has been suggested that there appears to be a benefit. We remember the early elation in 1998 when Trastuzumab (Herceptin) was approved by the FDA. It was heralded as a new era in treating metastatic breast cancer. What we have learned in the years since is that cancer cells are incredibly adaptable and eventually some women develop drug resistance to trastuzumab. ?The current Phase III studies on T-DM1 do not give any long term indication on whether the effects of T-DM1 will last or whether cancer cells will eventually adapt to this treatment as well.? We hope this type of targeted treatment? can ?outsmart? the cancer cells for the long-term but it?s just too soon to know, nor celebrate, what is only an incremental improvement compared to current therapy.?

However, in evaluating new drugs and their benefit to women, we also consider cost?which is unknown at this time but certainly not expected to be less than other treatments?and side effects. While there are still a large number of women experiencing severe side effects (grade 3 or worse) the percentage is smaller than with standard chemo (41% compared to 57% on standard chemo). In addition, the nature of the side effects is quite different, with patients on the pertuzumab arm spared the rash, vomiting/nausea and hair loss of standard chemo. ? ? ? ? ?

Based on these new Phase III data, T-DM1 appears to meet BCAction?s absolute minimum criteria for approving a new treatment as it seems the drug can offer patients a slight improvement in quality of life. We will watch for when T-DM1 goes before the FDA and ask that OS be part of the follow-up required if this drug gets accelerated approval. ?

While we are the first to champion the need for improved quality of life for women living with breast cancer, the media uproar about this drug ? inspired by an additional 3.2 months of progression-free survival ? is a sobering reminder of how desperately we need significantly better treatment options for women diagnosed with breast cancer, particularly women with metastatic disease.

Pertuzumab?

On June 8, the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of pertuzumab (under the brand name Perjeta) for use in combination with trastuzumab (Herceptin) and the chemotherapy docetaxel for the treatment of patients with HER2+ metastatic breast cancer who have not received prior anti-HER2 therapy or chemotherapy for metastatic disease. Subsequently, following the FDA approved Perjeta, Genentech announced in a press release there is indication that the drug is showing improvement in overall survival. However, Genentech won?t release the actual data until it is presented at medical conferences later this year and we have not been able to review the company?s claims.

At the San Antonio Breast Cancer Synposium in December 2011, the data released from the CLEOPATRA trial showed that combining Herceptin with pertuzumab delayed progression of tumor growth by six additional months, with the greatest benefit for ER- tumors. The study examined the effect of combining pertuzumab and trastuzumab in a double-blind randomized study for HER2+ metastatic breast cancer in women who were previously untreated for the metastasis. These results were widely heralded by clinicians as among the most important findings presented at the conference.

However, Breast Cancer Action has not yet seen data that demonstrates it meets our drug approval guidelines. The CLEOPATRA trial focuses on progression-free survival (PFS) rather than focusing on overall survival (OS). Additionally, the drug is more toxic with more side effects. ?While the researchers claim ?significantly prolonged progression-free survival, with no increase in cardiac toxic effects,? the rates of febrile neutropenia and diarrhea of grade 3 or above were higher in the pertuzumab group than in the control group. It is also important to note that these rates of toxicity in both groups, and particularly the pertuzumab-treated group, were even higher in the Asian patients that participated in the study. The majority of patients in the study were white or Asian, with insubstantial representation of other racial and ethnic groups.?

In addition to overall survival and quality of life data, Breast Cancer Action considers cost, recognizing that drugs that cost less than current treatments get into the hands of more women. Initial information regarding cost has indicated that a course of treatment with pertuzumab and trastuzumab could cost approximately $200,000. A price tag this high inevitably limits availability especially to already underserved communities.?

Of particular concern to us ?is the fact that this drug was approved by the FDA without going through the typical process of review through the Oncologic Drug Advisory Committee (ODAC). Although not all cancer drugs are required to go through this process, most do?especially drugs that have questionable end-points and toxic effects. ?We are concerned that the FDA has given Genentech a pass on the normal review process given the lack of clear OS information, the higher rates of febrile neutropenia?particularly in the Asian subgroup?and no data on other minority populations. BCAction is concerned about this short-changing of the FDA on review of pertuzumab. Because of pertuzumab?s failure to meet our criteria for approval, BCAction will outline our concerns to the FDA and vigorously monitor follow-up on the drug.

?Tykerb?

Upcoming FDA drug reviews include Tykerb, (lapatinib) scheduled to be reviewed by the FDA in late July. GlaxoSmithKline is seeking FDA approval of Tykerb tablets for use in combination with Herceptin for patients with Her2+ metastatic breast cancer that has progressed after previous treatment with Herceptin.?

Tykerb is currently approved for use in Her2+ breast cancer in specific situations. In 2007, Tykerb was approved with the chemotherapy capecitabine for Her2+ breast cancer for women in whom the cancer has progressed following chemotherapy and Herceptin. In January 2010 Tykerb received accelerated approval for treatment in combination with hormonal therapy of postmenopausal ?triple positive? (ER+/PR+/Her2+) metastatic breast cancer for women in whom the cancer has progressed after previous treatment of chemotherapy and Herceptin. Common side effects of Tykerb include diarrhea, fatigue, nausea, and rashes and the drug has been linked to toxic hepatitis.

We will take a close look at the evidence on Tykerb as it becomes available to the public. Based on our patient-centered analysis of the data, we are prepared to testify at the ODAC hearing to ensure that patient interest is represented at the FDA.?

In relationships, feelings of intimacy, closeness and satisfaction never stay exactly the same. The feelings you have for your partner today will change over time.

The feelings we have for our partner change for many different reasons:

Relationships are typically easiest at the beginning ? then things are new, exciting, and full of possibilities. And at the start of any relationship, people are on their best behavior and partners not know each other very well. So, people see their partners in the best possible light and lovers have the tendency to fill in the ?blanks? with positive information. But, over time, the things that were once new and exciting have a tendency to become routine and boring, possibilities turn into limitations, and as couples get to know each other better negative traits and characteristics begin surface. Added together, relationships lose some of their luster over time.

Every time your spouse or partner enters a new social environment there is always the risk that they might meet someone who they are more attracted too, someone who they have more feelings for, someone who they connect with better, and so on. Often people meet the love of their life after they have made a commitment to someone else. Unfortunately, life is often unpredictable and unfair when it comes to love and romance.

There has been a growing interest in flat London roofing across the globe and specifically in London, the heart of all leading flat designs in the world. Good roofing designs act as a good selling and renting strategy to potential buyers and renters. The real estate in London has recorded a great rise in the number of constructing and London roofing service companies. Roofing can either be new or repaired.

New roofs are the ones that put on new buildings ones that have just been constructed. Repaired roofs are the ones that are put on already existing buildings mostly renovated buildings. Roof repairs are made to buildings that are either leaking, ones that the owner may think they deserve a new outlook or even the fact the changing climatic conditions such that extreme heating or cooling. The destruction of roofs is likely to be caused by factors like: damage caused by strong winds, poor maintenance such as lack of protective paint, weathering that may be caused by air pollution or even acid rains and improper design such as poor roof structures, poor elasticity designs caused by contraction and expansion. In appropriate fitting like lack of enough basement support and cracks on the roof are additional possible causes of roof damage.

In order to rectify the defects of faulty London roofing service, a research by the industry players was conducted and asbestos roof repairs was found to be a reliable London roofing service material. Asbestos roof repairs are naturally occurring fibrous materials on roofs or surfaces of blocks. Commercial exploitation of asbestos roof repairs was carried out in late 19th century and its most application took place in between 1950-1970.This materials used back then are now being replaced with more developed and advanced ones.

The use of asbestos roof repairs as a flat London roofing material however comes with an attachment of liabilities. They cause serious health problems such as lung cancers and sores on the chest lining. Lung cancer has led to a number of multiple deaths with an average ranging up to 3500 annually. Those prone to attack by these materials are those who often come into contact with the fibers. This people are mainly workers from the construction companies and individuals such as those drilling, cutting or sawing the fibrous materials. The scientific research on the hazardous nature or the fibers is underway although medical reports have proved that they are hazardous. Measures to control the health risk due to the fibers have been developed such as laws to illegalize the use of the fibers.

This law however effective it may be does not completely solve the problem as many fibers that were installed in the past still exist and continue causing the lung cancers. The greatest pull back to the effective control of fibers is that they have been utilized in diverse ways and have been installed in home appliances. The use of asbestos roof repairs should be completely weeded out and an alternate treatment or good disposal of the fibers developed so as to reduce the number of deaths from the fiber infection. The best asbestos roof repairs with the affordable price at London roofing service.

ALMA reveals constituent of a galaxy at 12.4 billion light-years away

ScienceDaily (June 27, 2012) ? How and when did galaxies with hundreds of billions of stars form and evolve? The sun, which is the center of the solar system in which we live, is also only one of the countless stars contained within a galaxy. In brief, it can be said that we need to understand the evolution of galaxies to understand the world we live in.

One of the most effective methods of studying galaxy evolution is "element investigation." In short, this involves investigating the chemical composition of galaxies. In astronomy, observing distant galaxies means investigating galaxies in the past universe. (This is because the velocity of electromagnetic waves such as visible light and radio wave, or the speed of light, is finite -- approximately 0.3 million km per second. It takes time for the light to reach us and the light carries the information of celestial objects at the time when the light itself was emitted, then we can obtain the information of the past.) In fact, constituents of galaxies at various periods of the universe have been studied by visible light observations of distant galaxies using optical telescopes such as the Subaru Telescope.

However, galaxies in the phase of active star formation are covered in large amounts of dust which block visible light. Furthermore, for galaxy constituent investigation, it is necessary to observe very dark galaxies located at extreme distances. For these reasons, it has been difficult to investigate chemical composition of active star-forming galaxies at a great distance with visible light observations.

Conception of This Research

Tohru Nagao (Kyoto University), who heads the research team, explains that "We focused attention on millimeter waves, the radio waves with the wavelength of about 1 mm, with which we could study galaxies without being blocked even if there was a lot of dust, and decided to observe galaxies called "submillimeter galaxies" which have intense star formation activity in the process of evolving."

However, actual observation is not easy. In order to derive the galaxies' elemental abundances, it is necessary to detect emission lines emitted by multiple elements and examine their strength ratio. To detect the weak signals, high sensitivity is inevitably necessary. Last year, the research team observed a sub-millimeter galaxy called "LESS J033229.4-275619 (abbreviated to LESS J0332 hereafter)" that is about 12.4 billion light-years away from Earth in the direction of the constellation Fornax using the APEX telescope operated by the European Southern Observatory, and successfully detected a carbon emission line. However, due to the lack of sensitivity of the existing millimeter-wave telescopes, they have been unable to detect any emission lines except from carbon atom and carbon-bearing molecules. This is because carbon is one of the abundant elements in the universe and the emission lines from carbon atom or carbon-bearing molecules are rather stronger than those from other elements, in general. Therefore they could not investigate the constituents of this galaxy.

ALMA, the international radio astronomy observatory under construction in the Chilean Andes, has solved this sensitivity problem . Tohru Nagao and other staff proposed observing a nitrogen emission line from the sub-millimeter galaxy LESS J0332 with ALMA and comparing it with the already detected carbon emission line. More than 900 proposals from around the globe were submitted to ALMA for its first scientific observation period and reviewed by experts in various astronomical fields. The team led by Nagao finally won the ALMA observation time by surviving the competition with the oversubscription rate of nine.

Observations with ALMA

Observations were intermittently carried out from October 2011 to January 2012. Consequently, an emission line from nitrogen in the galaxy LESS J0332 was successfully detected.

As seen in the numbers shown at the vertical-axis, the brightness of the nitrogen emission line was less than one tenth of the brightness of the carbon emission line. The total observation time was 14.5 hours for detection of the carbon emission line with APEX. On the other hand, the total observation time with ALMA was only 3.6 hours to detect the weak nitrogen emission. From this, it is clear that ALMA already has quite high sensitivity, even though construction is not yet completed; only 18 antennas were used in this observation, while ALMA will be equipped with 66 antennas when completed.

Nagao, the project leader, said that "At first, I thought this observation would be very hard because the originally expected strength of the nitrogen emission line was very weak. So, I was very excited to find a clear nitrogen emission line. The power of ALMA overwhelmed me." Hatsukade, one of the research staff and an expert in millimeter-wave observations, commented, "I was very surprised with the excellent sensitivity of ALMA. ALMA has more antennas than conventional interferometers for millimeter/submillimeter waves so its images are less likely to be artificially influenced. Therefore, it was possible to get very clear images even in such a short time of observation. It would not have been possible to get these results without ALMA."

Element Investigation of a Galaxy at about 12.4 Billion Light-Years Away

The research team analyzed the element abundance of LESS J0332, comparing the brightness ratio of the observed emission lines from nitrogen and carbon with theoretical calculations. The results show that the elemental composition of LESS J0332, especially the abundance of nitrogen, is significantly different from that of the universe immediately after the Big Bang (consisting of almost only hydrogen and helium), but rather similar to that of the sun in the current universe (in which a variety of elements exist abundantly). It took 12.4 billion years for the emission lines from LESS J0332 to reach us, which means that we observe the galaxy located in the young universe at 1.3 billion light years after the Big Bang. "Submillimeter galaxies are thought to be relatively massive galaxies in the growth phase. Our research, revealing that LESS J0332 already has an elemental composition similar to the sun, shows us that the chemical evolution of these massive galaxies occurred rapidly made in the early universe, that is to say, in the early universe active star formation occurred for a short period of time," said Nagao, explaining the significance of the findings.

Home based business work just like formal work requires to be approached with a lot of care and diligence to succeed. Of course, there are different motivations for this kind of work. For many people, the need to run a business at home is need to be close to their families. For some, home based business work is a way to survive after being laid off or not finding fulltime employment. There are also those people who run their home based businesses after they have enough clients to supply them with sustainable work for a passion they initially did for fun. Whatever the reason provided, people who run such establishments and those who work for office settings, the end is the same. ?

Answer by Judy
This is better:
Go to a bookstore.
Find the very best book you can find on Personal Finance and Debt and Credit Repair.

I am a believer that you can teach yourself anything.
And these books have the knowledge and explain clearly everything.
Where do you think teachers learn from?

Get yourself a couple of great books for about $ 20 each and change your life without paying $ 600 for a course.

What is a Digital Marketing Company?

The basic function of Digital Marketing Company is to make it easy to establish web presence of the client by providing a complete service from initial concepts, discussion and designs through to securing domain name, developing tailored solutions and delivering comprehensive help and support throughout. Also to bring modern, accessible web design, successful ecommerce web design and Marketing traffic building using the latest technologies for maximum impact and performance of the website of the client.

Digital marketing works best when it?s integrated with other brand marketing activities.? Unfortunately most companies have separate marketing departments and it can be a challenge to integrate them with other brand activities.? For example if a brand is planning a special BOGO (buy one get one) promotion the marketing people need to be involved so they can determine the best way to spread the word online.

The marketing budget should reside with the digital marketing team.? This includes SEO, online advertising, website upgrades and maintenance and new features.? I know a lot of brands have one agency handling all their media but how can you be sure the media is optimized for digital.? I have seen some really lousy online ads developed by media agencies that were executing all a brands advertising.

What I have seen, and it happens way too often, is that marketing is usually a separate group of people who are expected to execute rather than strategize the best way to use marketing to meet brand and business objectives.? This is a huge liability for any brand.

Digital marketing people should always be involved in branding/product plans at the earliest stages.? They need to know as much about the brand/product as possible including the why, where, when and how.? This will give them time to develop a strategy.

Digital marketing people should know as much about your target audience as your market research people.? We especially want to know the psychographics and micro segmentation so we can better create marketing that is effective.

It is Important to remember Never, ever, to let brand people, who aren?t fully committed to digital marketing company, to dictate marketing tactics.? Most times they just don?t have the in depth knowledge to create a great digital marketing experience for consumers.? I still remember one brand person telling me ?we?re not content providers?.? That, to me, shows they don?t get it.

Hold you digital marketing people accountable.? If you?re going to create a new digital tool or program ask them how you are going to measure success.? By the way one usability study should not be used to make a decision on new tools or features of your website.

What Silicon Valley can learn from Mother Russia

Imperial tax records mined for ingredients of successful start-ups

Web edition : 1:11 pm

EVANSTON, Ill. ? Venture capitalists deciding whether to fund a new start-up could learn a thing or two from imperialist Russia. A new analysis of relationships among Russian entrepreneurs during the economic boom of the late 1800s and early 1900s reveals that the most successful teams were a mix of outgoing, gregarious networkers and cohesive, insular types.

Those ventures may have been trading in beets, barley and burlap, but they still hold lessons for doing business in the digital era. When investigating a potential start-up, investors should consider the mix of founding members in addition to each individual?s credentials, Brandy Aven, an expert in organizational behavior and theory at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, reported June 20 at the International Conference on Network Science.

Entrepreneurship research tends to focus on the characteristics of individuals when examining winning ventures; there?s little research on teams and even less consensus on what makes for success, Aven noted. Members of tight-knit, cohesive teams tend to have a lot of trust and share knowledge and information well. But these dense little groups may have fewer outside contacts and miss opportunities. Teams of brokers ? people with wide and varied contacts ? have a lot of access to new information and opportunities, but may lack trust and solidarity.

To get at whether all-broker or nonbroker teams fare better, Aven turned to data from late imperialist Russia, when both railroads and population were expanding and there was explosive growth in private enterprise and industrial output. To best tax this burgeoning economy, the czarist state began gathering data on all partnerships and joint-stock companies. Those contracts were later digitized by legal historian Thomas Owen, an independent scholar affiliated with Harvard University. These data included information on industry sector, including mining, manufacturing, finance, railroads, textiles, beets and malt. Contracts also revealed team size and membership, where the firm was located and how much capital it had raised.

Aven and Henning Hillmann of the University of Mannheim in Germany used this data gold mine to trace the relationships among team members for 2,053 Russian firms founded between 1869 and 1913. The teams that raised the most capital turned out to be functionally diverse ? some members had connections with a lot of outside people, and some members were from networks that were cohesive and tight-knit.

?All things being equal, if I have two firms to choose between, I should go with the one with more diversity,? said Aven.

People tend to think that brokers have all the advantages: They are very good at finding and using new stuff ? and at making money, said Ron Burt, an expert in networks and behavioral science at the University of Chicago. ?But once you are trying to get an operation running, closed can be better.?

In need of help with robotics? http://wfad08.org

Hi, I?m a freshman in high school and really in need of a lead into learning robotics. I have always been talented when it comes to technology, and robots have pretty much followed me my whole life. So now I really need to learn the world of robotics because I plan on applying for MIT later in my future. I want an MIT education so that I can make robotics my career, and thus advance the robotic technology for the world. I am experienced with computers and general electronics, but have little to no experience in programming, or engineering (although my father is a marine engineer). I know after writing that it may seem that I really have no experience in electronics, but believe me, technology is probably the biggest talent in my life and I would like to use that talent to benefit the technological world. Any help or guides would be great. Thank You : )

I had about as much experience as you when i realized robots were the thing for me. I found a Parallax Basic Stamp2 kit at Radio Shack for $79 and to this day i think it was the best $79 i ever spent. The Basic Stamp2 (BS2) is just a simple micro controller (the brain for most small robots). the instructions are very easy to follow even for someone with no programming experience. Like the other answer implies, C++ is very versatile and can run many robot controllers and applications (PC based, PIC micro controllers). The PBASIC programming language (used to program the BS2) is different than C++ but its ease of use is a good start into many other programming languages. The kit includes the BS2, the book and all kinds of electronic components to experiment with. And, there is TONS of support online.

p.s. i don?t work for parallax i just really like there stuff!!
