School of Rock Presents Little Wing, a Dynamic Early Music Education Program for Preschoolers

NEW YORK, Jan. 15, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- School of Rock, the national leader in music education for kids, unveiled today LITTLE WING, an early music education program for preschool age children. Classes will roll out in many of School of Rock's corporate and franchise locations nationwide starting in January 2013. The School of Rock team spent two years working with experts in the field of early childhood education, as well as professional musicians to develop a truly unique approach to inspiring kids to love music. Little Wing's experienced staff of Instructors will lead the classes. Students enrolled in the new program will participate in weekly 45-minute classes over an 8-10 week period, and enrollment fees will vary from school to school. Most locations will begin with a class focused on 4 and 5 year old students with a 2-3 year old program following soon after.

Little Wing was designed to be portable, so that the program can be delivered at affiliate locations. This allows Little Wing to partner with select preschools who want to add a music enrichment program to their existing curriculum. Little Wing will help young children understand rhythm and melody and introduce them to the language of music. Classes will feature movement games set to some of the most popular music from the past fifty years, and instructors will lead activities intended to spark creativity. WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - C.J. Harris scored a career-high 29 points and Wake Forest held off a late Boston College rally for a 75-72 Atlantic Coast Conference win Saturday.

Travis McKie added 18 points for the Demon Deacons (9-6, 2-1), who overcame shooting problems early in the first half to win their second straight ACC game.

Lonnie Jackson scored 23 points, Olivier Hanlan added 18 and Ryan Anderson had 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles (9-7, 1-2), who trailed by 12 points in the second half.

Wake Forest still led by 10 with five minutes remaining when Boston College began its comeback.

The Eagles cut the Demon Deacons' lead down to one point twice in the final two minutes, the last at 73-72 on a pair of Joe Rahon free throws with 1:28 remaining. With a chance to take the lead, Rahon missed a heavily-contested layup with five seconds left.

Frozen Lakes And Ponds In Denver Parks Are Not Considered Safe ...

DENVER (CBS4) ? Denver Parks and Recreation (DPR) released a statement on Thursday reminding visitors that walking or skating on frozen lakes or ponds in the Denver park system is prohibited.

DPR said the ice may appear to be thick enough, but the ice layer is actually very thin and unstable.

?We?ve had many incidents over the past several weeks where people were walking or skating on frozen lakes in our parks around the city,? said Scott Gilmore, Deputy Manager of Parks and Planning for DPR. ?These individuals are putting their lives at risk. The big swing in frigid and mild temperatures we see in Denver makes the ice layer on our ponds and lakes very unstable. It would be very easy for an adult or child to fall through the ice, creating a very dire situation.?

Over the past few weeks CBS4 has reported on several dogs that have died and others rescued after chasing birds onto a frozen pond or lake. Pets are required to be kept on a leash at all times.

DPR says the leash law is in place for the animal?s safety as well as the safety of others.

?Sadly, in the last month we?ve had at least two separate instances where a family pet has drowned after falling through the ice in one of our parks,? Gilmore said. ?This is a tragic outcome that could have been avoided had the animal been on a leash.?

The department is asking all park visitors to also be vigilant and to report any potential rule violations or safety issues to park staff on site or by calling the Denver Park Rangers hotline at (303) 331-4050.

Anyone who witnesses an emergency situation that requires an immediate response should always call 911 right away. If you see an animal or a person fall through the ice, do not go in after them. Stay on land and call 911 and wait for emergency personnel to arrive.

NASA'S Galex Reveals The Largest-Known Spiral Galaxy

WASHINGTON -- The spectacular barred spiral galaxy NGC 6872 has ranked among the biggest stellar systems for decades. Now a team of astronomers from the United States, Chile and Brazil has crowned it the largest-known spiral, based on archival data from NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) mission. GALEX has since been loaned to the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, Calif.

Measuring tip-to-tip across its two outsized spiral arms, NGC 6872 spans more than 522,000 light-years, making it more than five times the size of our Milky Way galaxy.

"Without GALEX's ability to detect the ultraviolet light of the youngest, hottest stars, we would never have recognized the full extent of this intriguing system," said lead scientist Rafael Eufrasio, a research assistant at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., and a doctoral student at Catholic University of America in Washington. He presented the findings Thursday at the American Astronomical Society meeting in Long Beach, Calif.

The galaxy's unusual size and appearance stem from its interaction with a much smaller disk galaxy named IC 4970, which has only about one-fifth the mass of NGC 6872. The odd couple is located 212 million light-years from Earth in the southern constellation Pavo.
Astronomers think large galaxies, including our own, grew through mergers and acquisitions -- assembling over billions of years by absorbing numerous smaller systems.

Intriguingly, the gravitational interaction of NGC 6872 and IC 4970 may have done the opposite, spawning what may develop into a new small galaxy.

"The northeastern arm of NGC 6872 is the most disturbed and is rippling with star formation, but at its far end, visible only in the ultraviolet, is an object that appears to be a tidal dwarf galaxy similar to those seen in other interacting systems," said team member Duilia de Mello, a professor of astronomy at Catholic University.

The tidal dwarf candidate is brighter in the ultraviolet than other regions of the galaxy, a sign it bears a rich supply of hot young stars less than 200 million years old.

The researchers studied the galaxy across the spectrum using archival data from the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope, the Two Micron All Sky Survey, and NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, as well as GALEX.

By analyzing the distribution of energy by wavelength, the team uncovered a distinct pattern of stellar age along the galaxy's two prominent spiral arms. The youngest stars appear in the far end of the northwestern arm, within the tidal dwarf candidate, and stellar ages skew progressively older toward the galaxy's center.

The southwestern arm displays the same pattern, which is likely connected to waves of star formation triggered by the galactic encounter.
A 2007 study by Cathy Horellou at Onsala Space Observatory in Sweden and Baerbel Koribalski of the Australia National Telescope Facility developed computer simulations of the collision that reproduced the overall appearance of the system as we see it today. According to the closest match, IC 4970 made its closest approach about 130 million years ago and followed a path that took it nearly along the plane of the spiral's disk in the same direction it rotates. The current study is consistent with this picture.

As in all barred spirals, NGC 6872 contains a stellar bar component that transitions between the spiral arms and the galaxy's central regions. Measuring about 26,000 light-years in radius, or about twice the average length found in nearby barred spirals, it is a bar that befits a giant galaxy.

The team found no sign of recent star formation along the bar, which indicates it formed at least a few billion years ago. Its aged stars provide a fossil record of the galaxy's stellar population before the encounter with IC 4970 stirred things up.

"Understanding the structure and dynamics of nearby interacting systems like this one brings us a step closer to placing these events into their proper cosmological context, paving the way to decoding what we find in younger, more distant systems," said team member and Goddard astrophysicist Eli Dwek.

The study also included Fernanda Urrutia-Viscarra and Claudia Mendes de Oliveira at the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil and Dimitri Gadotti at the European Southern Observatory in Santiago, Chile.

The GALEX mission is led by the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, which is responsible for science operations and data analysis. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, also in Pasadena, manages the mission and built the science instrument. GALEX was developed under NASA's Explorers Program managed by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. In May 2012, In May 2012, NASA announced it was loaning GALEX to Caltech, which continues spacecraft operations and data management using private funds.

"They've got some of the best bowlers in the world," Hussey said. "Lasith Malinga, I was lucky enough to play with him at the Melbourne Stars and he's in the form of his life. All our batters have to really get down to business and do their homework and really try to take him out of the equation.

"Never scared [of facing him] - it's always exciting. You always want to play the best bowlers in the world. It's a great opportunity to face him. If you do well against him, it gives not only your team a lot of confidence but yourself and your game a lot of confidence as well."

Hussey will also be aiming to put on a good show after suffering a considerable dip in form, the last time he took the field for the national team, which included an ODI series against Pakistan, along with a bit-part appearance in the subsequent World T20.
