A problem shared is a problem halved

ScienceDaily (Oct. 10, 2012) ? The experience of being bullied is particularly detrimental to the psychological health of school girls who don't have social support from either adults or peers, according to a new study by Dr. Martin Guhn and colleagues from the University of British Columbia in Canada. In contrast, social support from adults or peers (or both) appears to lessen the negative consequences of bullying in this group, namely anxiety and depression.

The work is published online in Springer's Journal of Happiness Studies.

Guhn and his team looked at whether the combination of high levels of bullying and low levels of adult as well as peer support have a multiplicative negative effect on children's well-being.

A total of 3,026 ten-year-old school children from 72 schools in Vancouver, Canada, took part in the study and completed questionnaires, which assessed their satisfaction with life, their self-esteem, and their levels of anxiety and depression. The authors looked at whether the ratings for these factors differed, according to the quality of the children's relationships with both adults and their peers and how often they felt victimized.

Overall, girls were more likely to report positive relationships with both adults and peers, higher satisfaction with life, higher self-esteem as well as higher anxiety levels. There were no differences between boys' and girls' reported levels of bullying and depression. However, as many as 1 in 7 girls and 1 in 6 boys felt victimized several times a week, with verbal and social victimization more commonly reported than physical bullying; cyber bullying appeared to be relatively low.

The authors also found that positive relationships with adults and peers were strongly linked to life satisfaction and self-esteem, whereas bullying was strongly linked to depressive symptoms and anxiety. In addition, victimization was particularly strongly linked to low life satisfaction, low self-esteem and more depressive symptoms in girls who reported low levels of social support from adults as well as from peers.

The authors conclude: "Our findings have implications for promoting children's well-being in school and community contexts, supporting interventions that foster relationship-building skills and simultaneously reduce victimization. In other words, children need more than the absence of risk factors to experience good mental health and well-being."

Talent and Social Business: What I am upto these days in #SocialHR

Here's a little update. I am currently in Mumbai on a two month long stint, working along with India's largest social media agency - Social Wavelength. They handle social media management and marketing for some of India's largest organizations. Social Wavelength has been a winner of the Red Herring Asia 100 award too.

My role at Social Wavelength is to conceptualize their first big different service vertical - into Social HR. Over the next two months I would be interacting with external HR heads to take their inputs into what the readiness of the HR community is to embrace social.

Some thoughts I have - which I'd like to validate are:

  1. Organizations that are looking at embracing social media internally, need a partner to understand their needs, and help them choose relevant tools and guide them through with implementing it successfully.
  2. Organizations need to monitor social conversations about their employment brand and joining those social conversations and would need help to do so.
  3. Organizations understand the benefits of employees acting as social media evangelists for their brands but are wary of the risks vs the returns. They would like a partner to suggest an enabling social media policy and educating/ training employees on how to use social media.
Would you be interested in any of these offerings? Let me know at gautamghosh @? socialwavelength.com?

Got skin cancer? Find out with self-exam that's as easy as your - KPCC

Brian Watt/KPCC

In the Southland we live for exposure to the sun, like these volleyball players in Manhattan Beach. One way to prevent skin cancer - a common consequence of all that sunshine - is self-examination.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer among people in the United States; one in five Americans get it during their lifetimes. In sunny climates ? as we have in the Southland ? it?s especially important to pay attention to your skin with easy-to-do self-exams.

All you need to check your skin for cancer is a mirror and your eyes. A second set of eyes from a friend or partner is even better for getting a good look at hard-to-see areas, such as your back, neck and the top of your head.

That?s the message from the American Academy of Dermatology. It's released a short YouTube video that demonstrates just how easy it is to do a skin self-exam.

During a self-exam, you?ll want to consider what the Academy calls the A-B-C-D-and-E?s of skin cancer.

The A is for asymmetry of a spot; B is for irregular borders; C is for varying color; D is for a diameter larger than a pencil eraser; and E is for a mole that evolves in size, shape or color.

If you have any of these signs, the Academy encourages you to make an appointment with a dermatologist who can help protect you against cancer.

Soon Censored? Korean Scientists Successfully Kill Cancer with ...

Lisa Garber
Prisonplanet.com
Oct 10, 2012

In South Korea, scientists used a magnetic field to get cancer cells to actually self-destruct. The body removes old, defective, and infected cells through the process of programmed cell death (PCD), or apoptosis. In apoptosis, the rejected cell responds to certain signals sent by the body by fragmenting. Immune cells then consume these fragments. The magnets help trigger apoptosis.?When apoptosis fails, however, rejected cells divide uncontrollably, developing tumors.

Magnets Induce Apoptosis

Professor Jinwoo Cheon of Yonsei University in Seoul and a team of scientists conducted experiments on bowel cancer cells using magnetic fields to induce apoptosis. They attached iron nanoparticles to antibodies, which bind to ?receptor? molecules on tumor cells. These molecules cluster when the magnetic field is applied, triggering the ?self-destruct? signal and thereby apoptosis. In the experiment, over half of the bowel cancer cells were destroyed when the signal for apoptopic clustering came into effect. Untreated cells remained unaffected and unharmed.

Big Pharma?s Response?

In a related experiment, the scientists performed the same therapy on zebra fish, which caused them to grow unusual tails. More trials are in the works.

?We have demonstrated that apoptosis signaling can be turned on in-vitro (in the laboratory) and in a zebra fish in-vivo (living) model by using a magnetic switch,? say the scientists.? ?Our magnetic switch may be broadly applicable to any type of surface membrane receptors that exhibit cellular functions on clustering.?

The study is to be published in the journal?Nature Materials. One must wonder how this form of therapy?one that does not, as of yet, line the pockets of Big Pharma?will develop in the world of traditional medicine. Drug manufacturers (literally)?bank on perpetual sickness, and?cancer drugs have shown time and again to worsen tumors.

But regardless of any potential alternative treatments, big pharma will continue to push these dangerous ?solutions? on the public. Even while numerous?cancer-fighting foods like turmeric, ginger, garlic, papaya leaf extract, berries, and many more exist, the pharmaceutical industry and mainstream medicine won?t recognize these as solutions.

LG Optimus L9 for T-Mobile hands-on (update: video)

LG Optimus L9 for TMobile handson

Just a day after it announced the LG Optimus L9, T-Mobile showed the smartphone off at MobileCon 2012. It's definitely a worthy member of the L-series of stylish (yet mid-range) handsets, sporting the same signature look and feel that the Korean manufacturer has taken to heart over the past few months. The device features a 4.5-inch qHD display, 2,150mAh battery, 1GHz dual-core TI OMAP 4430 processor with 1GB RAM, Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), 5MP rear camera with 1080p video recording capability, Gorilla Glass 2, 4GB internal storage and external storage capacity and support for the usual T-Mobile HSPA+ radios. Power users may not have a lot of love or appreciation for this device, given its rather mediocre processor compared to the rest of the giants on the market today. In our brief time using the L9, we witnessed a few bouts of lag, though we won't take too much of that seriously for now since this isn't the final retail product. But it feels comfortable in the hand, well-built and boasting the same leathery-textured battery cover as most of LG's recent phones. Check out our collection of images below!
