'Time reversal' research may open doors to future tech

ScienceDaily (Dec. 6, 2012) ? Imagine a cell phone charger that recharges your phone remotely without even knowing where it is; a device that targets and destroys tumors, wherever they are in the body; or a security field that can disable electronics, even a listening device hiding in a prosthetic toe, without knowing where it is.

While these applications remain only dreams, researchers at the University of Maryland have come up with a sci-fi seeming technology that one day could make them real. Using a "time-reversal" technique, the team has discovered how to transmit power, sound or images to a "nonlinear object" without knowing the object's exact location or affecting objects around it.

"That's the magic of time reversal," says Steven Anlage, a university physics professor involved in the project. "When you reverse the waveform's direction in space and time, it follows the same path it took coming out and finds its way exactly back to the source."

Play It Backwards

The time-reversal process is less like living the last five minutes over and more like playing a record backwards, explains Matthew Frazier, a postdoctoral research fellow in the university's physics department. When a signal travels through the air, its waveforms scatter before an antenna picks it up. Recording the received signal and transmitting it backwards reverses the scatter and sends it back as a focused beam in space and time.

"If you go toward a secure building, they won't let you take cell phones," Frazier says, so instead of checking everyone, they could detect the cell phone and send a lot of energy to it to jam it."

What differentiates this research from other time-reversal projects, such as underwater communication, is that it focuses on nonlinear objects such as a cellphone, diode or even a rusty piece of metal --when a waveform bounces off them, the frequency changes.

Most components electrical engineers work with are linear -- capacitors, wire, antennas -- because they do not change the frequency. With nonlinear objects, however, when the altered, nonlinear frequency is recorded, time-reversed and retransmitted, it creates a private communication channel because other objects cannot "understand" the signal.

"Time reversal has been around for 10 to 20 years but it requires some pretty sophisticated technology to make it work," Anlage says. "Technology is now catching up to where we are able to use it in some new and interesting ways."

Not only could this nonlinear characteristic secure a wireless communication line, it could prevent transmitted energy from affecting any object but its target. For example, Frazier says, if scientists find a way to tag tumors with chemicals or nanoparticles that react to microwaves in a nonlinear way, doctors could use the technology to direct destructive heat to the errant cells -- much like ultrasound is used to break down kidney stones. But unlike an ultrasound, that is directed to a specific location, doctors would not need to know where the tumors were and the heat treatment would not affect surrounding cells.

Bouncing Off the Walls

To study the phenomenon, the researchers sent a microwave pulse into an enclosed area where waveforms scattered and bounced around inside, as well as off a nonlinear and a linear port. A transceiver then recorded and time-reversed the frequencies the nonlinear port had altered and broadcast them back into the space. The nonlinear port picked up the time-reversed signal but the linear port did not.

"Everything we have done has been in very controlled conditions in labs," Frazier says. "It will take more research to figure out how to develop treatments," Frazier says. "I'm sure there are other uses we haven't thought of."

The team has submitted an invention disclosure to the university's Office of Technology Commercialization.

Inflammation may be a cause of plaque buildup in heart vessels

ScienceDaily (Dec. 2, 2012) ? Fifteen new genetic regions associated with coronary artery disease have been identified by a large, international consortium of scientists -- including researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine -- taking a significant step forward in understanding the root causes of this deadly disease. The new research brings the total number of validated genetic links with heart disease discovered through genome-wide association studies to 46.

Coronary artery disease is the process by which plaque builds up in the wall of heart vessels, eventually leading to chest pain and potentially lethal heart attacks. It is the leading cause of death worldwide.

The study, published online Dec. 2 in Nature Genetics, provides insights into the molecular pathways causing coronary artery disease, which is also known as coronary atherosclerosis.

"Perhaps the most interesting results of this study show that some people may be born with a predisposition to the development of coronary atherosclerosis because they have inherited mutations in some key genes related to inflammation," said Themistocles (Tim) Assimes, MD, PhD, a Stanford assistant professor of medicine and one of the study's lead authors. "There has been much debate as to whether inflammation seen in plaque buildup in heart vessels is a cause or a consequence of the plaques themselves. Our network analysis of the top approximately 240 genetic signals in this study seems to provide evidence that genetic defects in some pathways related to inflammation are a cause."

More than 170 researchers were involved in this massive meta-analysis combining genetic data from more than 190,000 research participants. Interestingly, about a quarter of the genetic regions associated with coronary disease or heart attack were also found to be strongly associated with cholesterol, especially high levels of the so-called bad cholesterol known as LDL. Another 10 percent were associated with high blood pressure. Both of these conditions are known risk factors for coronary artery disease.

"The signals that do not point to known risk factors may be pointing to novel mechanisms of disease," Assimes said. "It is imperative that we quickly gain a better understanding of how these regions are linked to heart disease, as such understanding will greatly facilitate the development of new drugs to prevent heart disease."

Genome-wide association studies, or GWAS, were first introduced in 2005 as a way of quickly scanning the entire genome to identify differences in the DNA code, or "polymporphisms," that predispose people to various common but genetically complex diseases. Results of these studies have shown that conditions such as heart disease involve the combined, subtle effects of far more polymorphisms than initially expected, requiring multiple massive meta-analyses such as this one to reliably uncover all of these genetic signals. The hope of scientists is that by working together in ongoing worldwide collaborations, the entire genetic contribution to the cause of heart disease will eventually be identified.

"Studies like this one help provide new pathways for scientists to investigate in more detail," said co-author Thomas Quertermous, MD, a Stanford professor of medicine. "The promise is in providing better insights into the pathophysiology of this disease."

This meta-analysis study built upon previous research published last year in Nature Genetics. In that study, investigators examined 2.5 million SNPs (genetic variants at specific locations on individual chromosomes) from 14 GWA studies, which led to the discovery of 13 new gene regions associated with heart disease. Investigators looked at data from the complete genetic profiles of more than 22,000 people of European descent with heart disease and more than 64,000 healthy people.

In the new study, scientists used all information from last year's study then added to it, reaching 41,513 patients with heart disease and 65,919 control patients. To genetically fingerprint a large number of subjects in a very cost-effective manner, the researchers used a specialized genetic chip that incorporated only the top signals from the original meta-analysis of the initial 14 GWA studies.

ProBlogger's Secrets for Building a Business Blog: Interview With ...

I caught up with Darren Rowse at his ProBlogger event in Melbourne recently and got to ask him about how get a business blog going. Here?s what we discussed in our interview.

Here?s a transcript (for those of you who prefer reading).

Adam Franklin: Hi there it?s Adam Franklin and I?m here with Darren Rowse. You may know him as ProBlogger, one of Australia?s premier bloggers. I?ve got a question for you? But first, thank you for having us at your course this weekend.

Darren Rowse: You?re welcome.

Adam Franklin: You spoke a lot about from small things big things come and you are obviously very successful; it?s taken 10 years, and congrats on your 10th year anniversary. For business bloggers, what type of effort do they need to need to be putting in at the early stages, and how long until they can expect genuine business results from a blog?

Darren Rowse: It is one of those things it is hard to give an exact timeframe and the exact results that you will get. It is certainly is something that the more you put in the better results, and that is pretty much like anything in life; the more you work at it the better.

I think for me, it is probably more important to understand who you are trying to reach than the amount of time, so I would really be thinking about; what are the needs of my potential readers? If it is a business; who are my customers, what are their needs, and how can I serve them through that?

Doing that hard work is probably where most of the work, is actually identifying; what are we going to talk about this blog? And setting yourself some targets, in terms of the writing that you are going to do, and then just consistently dripping out content that serves those needs.

I would probably spend a lot of time those first couple weeks, before you even start the blog, identifying needs and problems that people have, and then in mapping out what to do. I think that is probably the hardest part. Once you got those topics and those needs to write about, it is actually not that hard to create content, and it is the type of content that you do not even think anyone would, it is not even that important to you, because you have forgotten all the lessons that you have learned, but to other people, that is really important stuff.

Writing that really basic content that helps someone overcome a certain need really does not take that much time. The key is doing it consistently over time, and just consistently publishing good content.

Adam Franklin: Awesome. Where are some of the points where people give up, where they just need a bit more encouragement that results are just around the corner? Where to you find typically, they will fall over?

Darren Rowse: Typically, I would say a lot of bloggers give up before they start because they are completely paralysed and overwhelmed by the technology, that is often the point. I have talked to a lot of bloggers who have ideas for blogs but they do not act on
them.

The other point is usually about 3 months, and 3 months is the hard part because you do not get a lot of feedback from people. They say about 1% of visitors to a blog comment, so you could have 100 readers and not be getting any feedback, at all. You are actually doing something relatively significant, but you are not getting that interaction, so that is a really tough hurdle to get over, to start getting that engagement.

Then I often find about a year, in a year I guess you look back over a year and you think of all the work you have done on something, and for a lot of people, that is the point where they evaluate whether they continue or not. I personally find, yes, 2 or 3 years on my blogs is what it has taken to actually get over the hump, get that interaction, and to understand who my reader is, but also; what is my voice and how do I communicate to them?

Raiders running backs Darren McFadden and Mike Goodson are questionable with ankle injuries.? Two of Oakland?s running backs, Taiwan Jones (ankle) and Marcel Reece (hamstring, quadricep), are probable.
