In brick-and-mortar retail, there are hundreds of years of well-studied consumer behavior to guide shopkeepers. For example, putting staple items such as milk at the back of the convenience store so that patrons walk by other items they didn?t intend to buy. ?Kids Eat Free Night? is a gimmick to establish family dining patterns that are known to repeat.

But the online world is relatively young and small business online marketing norms are still developing.

73 Percent of Inbound Leads Aren?t Sales-Ready

With so much emphasis on generating leads, it?s easy to lose sight of the real goal. The reality is that conversion is rarely a quick event. It takes nurturing. No matter how great the onsite experience is, it?s important that an online marketing strategy recognize that the sale will be in several parts.

Online Marketers Use Email Poorly

Forty percent of marketers don?t use email for drip nurturing. There are also many businesses who still believe that buying a huge email list to use for a magical ?blast? of new customers will work. It won?t.

Eighty-one percent of marketers use email for initial lead generation. But often with poor results.

Email used wrong is an outbound marketing technique. Used correctly, email is an excellent complement to a small business online marketing strategy. But few small businesses know this distinction. This means targeting recipients who will actually be interested in the product and nurturing those who have already shown an interest.

Email Marketing Increases PPC & SEO Conversion

With the costs of pay-per-click (PPC) advertising and search engine optimization (SEO) efforts rising, the emphasis of a small business online marketing campaign will increasingly turn to conversion. This can be a bit confusing. If SEO or PPC generates an initial small business lead, but it is one of the 73 percent that isn?t sales-ready, the lead must then be nurtured after the first point of contact.

Email is the most effective nurturing mechanism by far. When a subsequent email, maybe the third or fourth in a nurturing series, brings the prospect back to purchase ? is that conversion due to email? Regardless of how the lead is categorized, small business should use an integrated marketing dashboard so they can measure this complex marketing behavior and understand it.

Conclusions

To put it in soccer terms, the assist is often as important as the goal. In other words, a small business online marketing campaign needs to recognize that 73 percent of leads won?t be ready to purchase on the spot.

SEO and PPC leads both need to be nurtured after the initial point of contact to bring the ultimate conversion rate up. This complex set of online behaviors needs to be well-tracked to avoid letting the potential customer walk out of the virtual store empty-handed.

Wall Street left to rebuild Obama ties after backing Romney

REUTERS - Wall Street firms gambled on Mitt Romney and lost. Now, faced with the prospect of even tougher regulations in President Barack Obama's second term, they have to build better ties with the new financial regulators he will appoint.

Obama lost the support of many bankers in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis and the passage of the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial reform law, which sought to shore up the financial system but also cost banks billions of dollars in annual profit.

The Democratic president has openly stated his distaste for "fat cat bankers" who "don't get it", and bankers fears more losses ahead if they cannot influence how the Dodd-Frank rules are implemented.

"He will continue to increase regulation, demonize and vilify businesses, and spend a lot of money, and tax people, and so forth," said Dick Kovacevich, a former Wells Fargo CEO and supporter of Republican challenger Romney.

Wall Street firms are also worried about Elizabeth Warren, whose victory in the Massachusetts Senate race may galvanize her to push for more regulations on bank lending to protect consumers. Warren was instrumental in creating the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which critics say could weigh down the economy with new regulations.

"I think the Obama win, along with Elizabeth Warren, will lead to more accountability and tighter regulation on Wall Street," said Chris Tobe, who advises pension plans as a principal at Stable Value Consultants and is a trustee of the Kentucky state pension fund. "Especially after a big shift to Romney from Wall Street, Obama I believe will be less likely to hold back on regulation this term."

People working in the U.S. securities and investment industry gave $20 million to Romney's campaign, versus $6 million to Obama, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Four years ago, Obama received $16 million and Republican nominee John McCain only attracted $9 million.

"I voted for Obama in 2008 but obviously believed that Romney would be better able to handle the problems that we're confronting," said Scott Sperling, co-president of private equity firm Thomas H Lee Partners. "It is incumbent on us to work with the administration in a productive way to deal with these issues."

RELATIONS WITH REGULATORS

Some banking industry lobbyists say their focus will be on the key regulators Obama is expected to name in his second term.

Among the financial industry's top complaints are the Volcker rule, which prevents banks from making big bets in financial markets with their own money, and the Durbin amendment, which limits the fees they can charge merchants for processing debit-card transactions.

Banks also want to scale back capital requirements, which cut into the returns banks can earn on their equity capital.

As key details of Dodd-Frank have yet to be ironed out, the banks need good relations with regulators to influence their interpretation of the rules.

Chairmen often determine agendas at agencies such as the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), so Obama's choices to fill any open spots could affect how quickly new rules are rolled out.

"If there was a different chair who had a different agenda, you could slow things down," said Bart Chilton, a Democratic commissioner at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

CHANGING CAST OF CHARACTERS

Major power players under Obama, including Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, are expected to step down, offering Wall Street a chance to reset relations.

One possible replacement for Geithner, who has said he will not stay for a second Obama term, is White House Chief of Staff Jack Lew, a former Citigroup Inc banker.

"I hope Obama puts someone in who understands fiscal issues and who will have stature to work on the Hill to negotiate some type of package on fiscal reform," said Sheila Bair, former Federal Deposit Insurance Corp chairman.

SEC Chairman Mary Schapiro's term does not expire until June 2014, but speculation about her departure has been swirling for well over a year. Last month, she attempted to shoot down the rumors, saying she had not thought about her post-SEC plans.

SEC watchers speculate the job could go to SEC Commissioner Elisse Walter, a close friend of Schapiro's and a former executive at the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, an industry-funded watchdog.

CFTC Chairman Gary Gensler's term technically expired in April. He is allowed to stay on as chairman until the end of 2013 and his renomination is an open question.

Gensler has been assailed by Republicans over his implementation of Dodd-Frank and criticized by lawmakers on both sides of the aisle following the collapse of futures brokerages MF Global and Peregrine Financial Group.

Some Democratic politicians have also criticized Gensler for not doing enough to crack down on oil market speculators, with a few going so far as to suggest he should not be renominated.

FISCAL CLIFF

Much of Wall Street's regulatory agenda, however, is set to take a back-seat in the short term due to the looming fiscal cliff -- a package of tax increases and federal spending cuts that will begin in January unless lawmakers act.

Bankers are worried an impasse in solving the issue could spark an economic downturn that would hit the value of assets and make banks more reluctant to lend.

In the longer term, banking lobbyists and other opponents to Dodd-Frank will try to beat back some rules with technicalities.

Paul Atkins, a Republican and former SEC commissioner, said he expects Dodd-Frank reform critics may have some success making narrow legal challenges and seeking to throttle reforms through congressional oversight.

"Dodd-Frank assigned a lot of powers to the regulatory agencies, so there is not much that Congress can do," he said.

"I expect that the Republican House would keep the pressure on through hearings, like they are doing now. People will also certainly take the fight to the courts." A leaked promo poster from WIND mobile shows the carrier getting the Huawei Ascend D Quad XL (along with a pair of movie tickets to see Django Unchained with purchase). There is nothing about a date or a price, but we're going to guess that it will be "soon" and "relatively cheap" respectively. 

While the price on the D Quad should be low, a quick look at our review will let you know that this isn't your average budget handset. During the week Andrew had it for evaluation, we tried to find fault with it but came up short most times. It's a good, solid ICS phone with a great screen.

As soon as anyone says anything official, we'll let you know. Believe it or not, this is one to keep an eye on.

Twenty chambers are forecast to switch parties ? higher than the average of 13 that typically switch every two-year election cycle. But unlike 2010, when all 22 chambers that flipped control turned Republican, both Democrats and Republicans could make gains on Nov. 6, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), a research organization in Washington.?

"Right now, some races are so close, it does not appear to be a big wave for either party,? says Tim Storey, an elections analyst with the NCSL.

Thanks to 2010, Republicans have majority control of 59 of the 98 state chambers. Democrats currently control 36 chambers, and three are tied. ?Republicans are at their highest point of control of legislating since the 1920s, in not just winning seats, but winning chambers across the country," says Mr. Storey. The midterm vote "was a sweep in every state of the word.??

But the tea party surge that fueled the Republican gains does not appear to be playing as much of a role this year.

The state legislature election ?is very localized, it is not a wave cycle. This is the first time since 2004 we are seeing the election turn out in a way where one party does not run the table on all close contests,? says Louis Jacobson, who is forecasting the election at PolitiFact, a fact-checking project operated by the Tampa Bay Times in Florida. ?It?s going to matter on candidate quality, not weaker candidates riding on the coattails of a strong party wave.?

That doesn?t mean Tuesday?s election will not make the history books. Expected wins for Republicans in both the Arkansas House and Senate will give Republicans control of every legislative chamber in the South. Democrats have controlled state politics in Arkansas for more than 130 years.

Steady Republican gains since the days when Bill Clinton was president helped move the numbers away from Democrats, plus recent redistricting efforts have favored more sparsely populated parts of the state, where something as simple as a familiar name can prove decisive.

Because building sites in the city, particularly Manhattan, tend to be small, the wells tend to be vertical, just like the buildings. Manhattan is not an ideal location for geothermal heat pump systems, because the wells must go so deep ? to depths of roughly 1,500 feet ? to reach the volume of land necessary to provide a constant temperature. In other areas with more available land, a geothermal heat pump system can be more spread out and much shallower, making it less costly to dig.
