Thread: Which drill press? - Family Woodworking
I think you'll find a lot of similarities between the brands. (I suspect the main iron castings are coming from only a handful of Chinese factories.) I'd suggest shopping based on features more than brands. And if it's a option in your area, buying a used drill press is often a way to get a lot of bang for the buck. New or used, I suspect you can find several good choices well within your price range.
I have a 17" Craftsman with a 1 HP motor. Although I generally shy away from Craftsman power tools since there's usually something better for the same price elsewhere, I got this one at a price I couldn't refuse.
Anyway, the things that I've appreciated having, and would look for in any brand:
- Wide range of speeds, particularly the lower ranges for Forstner bits
- Long quill travel with a good depth stop system
- A large table (mine has one, but I added an even larger laminate table to it)
- A strong motor
- Laser aiming - was kind nifty at first, but it's too easy to bump it out of position. I prefer just checking the position the old-fashioned way...with the bit itself (drill not spinning)
- Tilting table - Others use theirs a lot, but I've never had the need to tilt the table. I've tilted the piece I'm drilling instead.

Israel confirms killing Arafat deputy in 1988
JERUSALEM (AP) ? Lifting a nearly 25-year veil of secrecy, Israel acknowledged Thursday that it killed the deputy of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in a 1988 seaborne raid in Tunisia.
Two of those involved in the operation now hold high political office ? Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Vice Premier Moshe Yaalon. At the time, Barak was deputy military chief, and Yaalon was head of the Sayeret Matkal unit. Their precise roles in the operation were not divulged, and both men's offices declined comment.
Israel has long been suspected of assassinating Khalil al-Wazir, who was better known by his nom de guerre Abu Jihad. But only now has the country's military censor cleared the Yediot Ahronot daily to publish the information, including an interview with the commando who killed him, at least 12 years after the newspaper obtained the information.
"I shot him with a long burst of fire," the now-deceased commando Nahum Lev told Yediot. "I was careful not to hurt his wife, who had showed up there. He died," Lev told Yediot prior to his death in a motorcycle accident in 2000. "Abu Jihad was involved in horrible acts against civilians. He was a dead man walking. I shot him without hesitation."
Dozens of similar operations have been attributed to Israel over the decades. But Israel rarely takes responsibility, and this public acknowledgement gives a rare glimpse into its covert operations.
Abu Jihad founded the Palestine Liberation Organization with Arafat and was blamed for a series of deadly attacks against Israelis. Among them, he masterminded a 1978 attack on an Israeli bus that killed 38 Israelis. Later, he organized the first Palestinian uprising against Israel, which began in December 1987.
The following April, Israel killed him.
According to the Yediot report, the operation was a joint effort by the Mossad secret service and the elite commando unit Sayeret Matkal.
At the time of the raid, the Palestine Liberation Organization, headed by Arafat, was based in Tunisia.
From a command post on an Israeli boat in the Mediterranean Sea, 26 Israeli commandos reached the shores of the North African nation of Tunisia on rubber boats.
Lev, the commando, approached Abu Jihad's home in the capital Tunis with another soldier who was dressed as a woman. The two pretended to be a vacationing couple, with Lev carrying what appeared to be a large box of chocolates. Inside the box, however, was a gun fitted with a silencer.
Upon encountering the first of Abu Jihad's bodyguards, Lev drew his weapon and shot the man in the head. Another team killed a separate bodyguard and a gardener before entering the expansive villa. Lev's partner was the first to fire at the Palestinian leader. When Lev noticed Abu Jihad reaching for a weapon he shot and killed him.
It was not clear why Israel's military censor permitted publication of the report now, at least 12 years after the paper got the interview with the commando. The censor has authority to block publication of material deemed a threat to national security.
The Palestinians have long accused Israel of being behind the assassination. Nonetheless, Abbas Zaki, a top official in Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement, said the Palestinians and Tunisia should now "work to bring Israel to justice." Fatah is the dominant faction in the PLO.
Wazir's son, Jihad al-Wazir, who currently heads the Palestinian central bank, said the family had no comment.

While these applications for money are difficult to get as the government has the responsibility of weeding out fraud, they are easy enough to apply for. All that the person with the injury has to do is go to their local government office and fill in a form.
However, filling in a form is not the only step they should take. They will also have to provide a medical certificate that validates their claim of not being able to work. They can get this from a doctor or any medical practitioner who has asserted that they are not fit to work in the field in which they are trained.
What is often misunderstood about these endowments includes that if somebody is incapacitated, they can do some forms of work, but not fundamentally what they have been trained in. This suggests that if they have been trained in fields such as of mechanics but lose the use of their limbs, working at the similar job is impossible as is getting the same pay, and this offers an opportunity for a claim. However, if they remain able to toil in a substitute industry and get the same income, they should not claim.
People often claim for disability for things that may seem frivolous. Some will claim they cannot work because of a complaint such as irritable bowel syndrome, or they won't be able to complete a day's work due to severe migraines. Some doctors and human resources personnel will argue that these excuses are not just silly, but also a way of defrauding the government.
The alternative side of this argument is while not precisely serious disabilities, difficulties like these can be serious for people who suffer from them. A boss may joke if you say you have a problem such as irritable bowel syndrome, but for the person suffering from it, the pain and recurrent trips to a bathroom may be a serious problem. While this problem disturbs your work, you sure do have an entitlement.
While problematic to determine what an inability is and what may be pushing for compassion, perhaps it is a government's occupation to define. If cash originates from an administration, it becomes their work to measure those who merit disabled grants against those who don't. Of course, the cash actually is garnered from taxpayers.

Position Description: A highly motivated and organized Office Coordinator is needed to assist the Faith Formation/Religious Education (FF/RE) Ministries office. Duties and Responsibilities:
? Support all aspects of the K-12 Sunday morning Religious Education program. ? Provide administrative support for RCIA/RCIA Adapted for Children, Baptism and Marriage Preparation, Confirmation, 1st Reconciliation and Eucharist. Includes registration of candidates/participants, recording and updating sacramental information, maintaining rosters, creating calendars, preparing materials, assisting with workshops and ordering supplies.
