Grandma's pot cookies land Calif. toddler in hospital

A three-year-old California boy?was rushed to the hospital Saturday morning after apparently eating marijuana-laced cookies.

The family believes the boy?got into his grandmother?s stash of chocolate-chip pot cookies, tucked away in a garage refrigerator, one day earlier. ?

The family called police around 10:30 a.m. the next day when the toddler would not wake up after a long night?s sleep, and they realized he may have eaten the cookies, according to a press release from the Murrieta Police Department.

The boy?s grandmother, who had been diagnosed with cancer, had a doctor?s recommendation for medical marijuana to treat her pain and help her sleep, Sgt. Phil Gomez told The Press-Enterprise newspaper.

The boy?s aunt was babysitting him and his younger sibling Friday while the father was away, Gomez said. When the father returned that afternoon, he noticed crumbs on the garage floor and assumed the child?s grandmother had been into the cookies, the Press-Enterprise reported.


The boy fell asleep around 5 p.m., Gomez said. The family didn?t become concerned until the next morning, however, when they couldn?t wake him up.

At that point, Gomez said, the father mentioned noticing the crumbs and decided to call police.

The boy was admitted to a local hospital for observation and later released.

It is not known how much the boy ate, but the child?s grandmother said a silver-dollar-size bite had been enough to make her sleep, the Press-Enterprise reported.

?It?s unfortunate that they didn?t take better steps to keep those cookies out of reach of the child,? Gomez said. ?[The grandmother] claims she?s not going to make them ever again.?

Police have not released the names of the family members and said the investigation is ongoing. No arrests have been made.

Investigators are awaiting the results of a toxicology test. If traces of marijuana are found in the boy?s system, Gomez said, family members could potentially face a child endangerment charge.?

The Journal of Visualized Experiments

As of July 2, 2012, JoVE (Journal of Visualized Experiments) launches the first and only scientific video publication for physics and engineering. The journal is opening a new section, JoVE: Applied Physics, in addition to its current sections in biology and medicine. It will focus on the experimental disciplines within physics, mechanical and electrical engineering, and interdisciplinary fields such as materials science and chemical physics.

Already, submissions for publication in JoVE: Applied Physics have been coming from leading academic institutions around the world, including the California Institute of Technology in California, USA; the Leibniz Institute in Berlin, Germany; and the University of Victoria in British Columba, Canada.

The opening article features a method to fabricate thin-film solar cells from the laboratory of Dr. Sergey Varlamov at the School of Photovoltaics at University of New South Wales in Australia. "One of the major trends in solar energy conversion is reducing the thickness of solar cells. It both saves the expensive semiconductor material and allows more cost-effective manufacturing" explained Dr. Varlamov. Through an alternative approach to light scattering, Dr. Varlamov's lab has demonstrated that they can increase solar cell potential by 45%, while at the same time reducing thickness.

Dr. Varlamov mentioned that "new light-trapping techniques need to be developed now, concurrently with reduction of commercial solar cell thickness and introduction of new thin solar cell technologies", and that JoVE "provided an opportunity to demonstrate both the poly-Si thin-film cell technology and the principle of plasmonic light-trapping in an easy-to-understand visual form."

"It is JoVE's first step outside of the biological sciences and is anticipated to be the first of many," said Meghan Berryman, Associate Editor for JoVE: Bioengineering, "JoVE has been previously commended for increasing productivity in biological sciences and we are confident that this new section will help open a window into the physical sciences. JoVE is both pleased and excited to move into this foundational field. It is a natural next step in the process of building a novel video-based scientific publication."

Vanadium pentoxide nanoparticles mimic natural enzymes and inhibit surface build-up of algae and bacteria

Scientists at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) in Germany have discovered that tiny vanadium pentoxide nanoparticles can inhibit the growth of barnacles, bacteria, and algae on surfaces in contact with water, such as ship hulls, sea buoys, or offshore platforms. Their experiments showed that steel plates to which a coating containing dispersed vanadium pentoxide particles had been applied could be exposed to seawater for weeks without the formation of deposits of barnacles, bacteria, and algae. In comparison, plates that were coated only with the ship's normal paint exhibited massive fouling after exposure to seawater for the same period of time. The discovery could lead to the development of new protective, antifouling coatings and paints that are less damaging to the environment than the ship coatings currently used.

Marine fouling is a problem that costs the shipping industry more than 200 billion dollars per year. The accumulation of organisms such as algae, mussels, and barnacles increases the objects' water resistance and, in consequence, fuel consumption. This means additional costs for shipping companies and, even worse, increased environmental damage due to extra CO2 emissions. Within only a few months, an underwater boat hull can be completely covered and overgrown with organisms. According to Lloyds, this means an increase in fuel consumption of up to 28 percent and about 250 million tons of additional CO2 emissions per year. While it is possible to counteract this effect to some extent by means of the use of antifouling paints, conventional biocides are less effective and can have adverse environmental consequences. In addition, microorganisms can develop resistance to them.

It was one of nature's own defense mechanisms that provided the inspiration for the approach now taken by the team of scientists working under Professor Dr. Wolfgang Tremel of the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry at JGU. Certain enzymes found in brown and red algae produce halogen compounds that have a biocidal potential. It is assumed that these are synthesized by the algae to protect them against microbial attack and predators. The chemists at Mainz University decided to mimic this process using vanadium pentoxide nanoparticles. According to their article published in Nature Nanotechnology, vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) nanoparticles have "an intrinsic biomimetic bromination activity [] which makes them a practical and cost-efficient alternative for conventional chemical biocides." Vanadium pentoxide functions as a catalyst so that hydrogen peroxide and bromide combine to form small quantities of hypobromous acid, which is highly toxic to many microorganisms and has a pronounced antibacterial effect. The required reactants are present in seawater: This already contains bromide ions, while small quantities of hydrogen peroxide are formed when it is exposed to sunlight.

The process has been demonstrated both under laboratory conditions and in natural seawater. It has only very minimal consequences for the environment because the effect is restricted to micro-surfaces. The metallic oxide is particularly potent when it is present in the form of nanoparticles because then, due to the larger surface area, there is an enhanced catalytic effect.

"Vanadium pentoxide nanoparticles, due to their poor solubility and the fact that they are embedded in the coating, are considerably less toxic to marine life than are the tin- and copper-based active substances used in the commercially available products," explains Wolfgang Tremel. In his view, ships' coatings based on vanadium pentoxide could be a practical and cost-effective alternative to conventional chemical biocides. "Here we have an environmentally-compatible component for a new generation of antifouling paints that employ the natural defense mechanism used by marine organisms."

Ron Wever, the team's Dutch cooperation partner from the University of Amsterdam, has been investigating such natural defense mechanisms for the last 15 years. He suggested adding the enzyme involved, i.e., vanadium haloperoxidase, to antifouling paints. The chemists in Mainz are now working together with Wever to develop vanadium pentoxide nanoparticles. "Vanadium pentoxide particles are considerably cheaper and also more stable than genetically produced enzymes," he adds.

A research group headed by Dr. Klaus Peter Jochum of the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz has been conducting experiments to determine whether the use of vanadium pentoxide might have a negative effect on the environment. Using a highly sensitive ICP mass spectrometer, the scientists determined the concentration of vanadium in various samples of seawater that had been exposed to the coated material for different lengths of time. The results showed that levels were only slightly elevated above the normal average vanadium concentration in seawater. It can thus be concluded that only very tiny amounts of vanadium migrate from the coating into seawater and will thus have no negative impact on the environment.

The Opposite Sex: Advice for Men & Women | Business Networking ...

Last week I posted a summary of the conclusions my Business Networking and Sex co-authors and I came to after surveying over 12,000 people and conducting months of research.? I promised that this week I would post advice for both women and men in achieving networking success with the opposite sex so below I?ve outlined some key tips Frank De Raffele, Hazel Walker, and I put together.

We Say . . .

We?re all trying to get to the same place.? It will be much more profitable for all of us if we can help each other along the way.? Here are a few things to guide your success in networking with the complementary gender:

For the Ladies

  • Don?t get stuck in the credibility phase of the VCP Process?.? Ask for what you want.
  • When asking for help, communicate clearly exactly what it is that you want.
  • Make time for networking.
  • When speaking to men, try to impress them and share your accomplishments.
  • When spoken to inappropriately, speak up about it immediately.
  • Dress for business at business events.
  • Put systems in place to track your business.
  • Stay in contact with and follow up on leads, referrals, and acquaintances made.
  • Diversify your networks.
  • Remember that networking is ultimately about getting business, so ask for both business and referrals.
  • Convey an image to others that you are a serious businessperson, in all that you do.
  • Get educated about referral systems.
  • Don?t lump all men into the same group.

For the Guys

  • Slow down and build the relationship.
  • Work through the VCP Process? in the proper order of its phases.? Don?t race through the credibility phase.
  • Make and maintain eye contact.
  • Listen and ask relational questions.
  • Don?t assume that women don?t take their business seriously.
  • Don?t hit on women at networking events.
  • Edit what you are about to say, using filters to sift out what is not business appropriate.
  • Stay in contact with and follow up on leads, referrals, and acquaintances made.
  • Stay informed about the best, most current, and cutting-edge networking practices.
  • Develop and use systems for your networking activities.
  • Make time for networking.
  • Speak to relate, not just to impress.

GOP: Voters will have final say on health care law

(AP) ? Republican congressional leaders said Sunday that voters ? not the Supreme Court ? will have the final word on President Barack Obama's health care law come November. And they are betting that the law's unpopularity will be enough to drive Democrats from power.

The White House's response? Bring it on.

"We've got one last chance here to beat Obamacare, and we can do that in the November election," said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, calling the law the "single worst piece of legislation" passed in modern times.

White House chief of staff Jack Lew countered that he believes most Americans want to put the health care debate to rest.

"I actually think the American people want us to focus on the economy, on creating jobs and moving forward," said Lew.

Republicans and Democrats have been wrangling for the upper hand in the health care debate since last week's Supreme Court ruling upholding the law's mandate that individuals buy health insurance or face a penalty. Chief Justice John Roberts, a conservative, provided the pivotal vote in that decision by ruling that the penalty was legal under the government's taxing authority.

While technically handing a political victory to Obama, Roberts' ruling invigorated Republicans eager to cast the law as a new tax.

"The American people do not want to go down this path," said House Majority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio. "They do not want the government telling them what kind of insurance policy they have to buy, and how much they have to pay for it, and if you don't like it we're going to tax you."

Democrats refute the characterization of the law, even as Roberts handed them a technical victory by voting to uphold the law. Lew said the mandate would impact only 1 percent of Americans ? those who can afford health insurance but refuse to buy it.

"It's a penalty for free riders," said Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.

Yet public opposition to the health care law remains high. Forty-seven percent of respondents in a recent Associated Press-GfK poll said they oppose the law while 33 percent said they support it.

However, much of the polling does find strong support for individual elements, like allowing young adults to remain on their parents' plan to age 26. Some Democrats see that as an opening to reframe the debate.

Republicans say they believe last week's ruling by the high court gives them fresh ammunition to attack Obama ? and the Democrats who support him ? in the upcoming election because of the health care bill's connection to jobs. The GOP says the law puts onerous mandates on industry that could stifle job creation.

"I think it's intertwined with the economy, and I think it's an example where Washington doesn't get it," said Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., of the health care bill.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Sunday that Republicans, including Mitt Romney, are "being the mouthpiece of the health care industry" and that the bill will actually improve the economy.

"The costs were unsustainable," she said of health care. "It's a competitiveness issue for business and for our economy. So we had to (come) to a place where we lowered costs to all concerned, and that we again take it down a path where we continue to lower costs."

If given control of the Senate next year, McConnell said he would support using budget reconciliation rules to repeal the health care law. Doing so would prohibit Senate filibusters and require only 51 votes to succeed. In 2010, Republicans lambasted Democrats for relying on these rules to pass the health care bill, calling their tactics unusual and hyperpartisan.

McConnell said he'll do whatever it takes to repeal the law.

"I'm confident they're going to give us the votes to repeal it," he said of the American public.

The House is scheduled to vote to overturn the law on July 9. The vote will largely be symbolic since the Democrats control the Senate. But it will put lawmakers on record for the upcoming political campaign.

McConnell and Lew spoke on "Fox News Sunday." Boehner, Schumer and Coburn spoke on CBS' "Face the Nation." Pelosi spoke on NBC's "Meet the Press."
