(AP) ? David Lavau's children drove slowly along the perilously curved mountain road, stopping to peer over the treacherous drop-offs and call out for their father, missing for six days.

Then, finally, a faint cry: "Help, help." The voice from the wilderness not only let Lavau's children find him, it may have brought closure to another family and another missing persons case.

Close to a week after his car plunged 200 feet into a ravine, Lavau, 68, was rescued Thursday by his three adult children, who took matters into their own hands after a detective told them his last cellphone signal came from a rugged section of the Angeles National Forest.

And near him they found a body in another car that belonged to an 88-year-old man reported missing 10 days earlier.

As Lavau lay injured in the woods next to his wrecked car, he survived by eating bugs and leaves and drinking creek water, a doctor said.

One of the first things he requested after his rescue: a chocolate malt, his daughter Chardonnay Lavau said on NBC's "Today" show.

Lavau was in serious but stable condition Friday at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital with three rib fractures, a dislocated shoulder, a broken arm and fractures in his back, said emergency room physician Dr. Garrett Sutter. He was expected to be released in three to four days after surgery on his shoulder.

Dr. Ranbir Singh, the hospital's trauma director, said Lavau told him he was driving home about 7 p.m. when he was temporarily blinded by the headlights of an oncoming car. He braked, but failed to gain traction. The car flipped and plunged down the embankment.

It was not clear why Lavau was in the area.

Lavau said he was unsure if he collided with the car. However, a second car containing a male body was found next to Lavau's vehicle.

That car, a Toyota Camry, was identified as belonging to 88-year-old Melvin Gelfand, whose family had reported him missing on Sept. 14, said Los Angeles police Detective Marla Ciuffetelli of the missing persons unit.

The body found in the car could not be visually identified due to decomposition, but Gelfand's son-in-law Will Matlack said the family had been contacted by the coroner's office, which was trying to match fingerprints or dental records to make a positive identification.

"The coroner said it's 99 percent a sure thing," Matlack said.

Lavau spent the night in his wrecked car and crawled out in daylight. He found a stream nearby and ate ants, the doctor said. He also found a flare in the other car and tried to light it, but it was expired. He also couldn't find his cellphone.

Lavau could hear cars and see their lights on the road above and was hopeful he'd be discovered, but as time passed, he grew more uncertain.

"He mentally said goodbye to his family. He wasn't sure anyone would be able to find him," Singh said.

His children told "Today" that after realizing he was missing, they contacted a Los Angeles County sheriff's detective, who was able to narrow Lavau's whereabouts through his most recent cellphone use, text messages and debit card purchases, to the sparsely populated area about 50 miles north of downtown Los Angeles.

The children then organized themselves into a search party.

"We stopped at every ravine and looked over every hill, and then my brother got out of the car and we kept screaming, and the next thing we heard Dad saying, 'Help, help,' and there he was," Lisa Lavau said.

Sean Lavau slid down the embankment to reach his father, who was airlifted to the hospital while firefighters helped his children get back up the ravine.

Lisa Lavau told KABC-TV that while her father was stranded, he used the other driver's eyeglasses so that he could see.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident, trying to establish what happened.

It was not clear why Lavau was in the area. He is expected to make a full recovery and was reported in good spirits.

"He was very desirous of a lobster taco," Sutter said.

Matlack said the Gelfand family is grateful to the Lavaus for their search, calling it "a brave and spunky thing to do."

Gelfand simply disappeared, leaving no clues. How he ended up 50 miles north of Los Angeles in his own car remains a mystery, his son-in-law said.

"He didn't show any signs of dementia," Matlack said. "This is the part of the question we'll never know the answer to."

Matlack called on authorities to look at the dangerous stretch of road that claimed his father-in-law's life and endangered another. "How many cars have to go over the edge of that road before somebody has to do anything about it?" he asked.

Lessons In Leadership - Strategic Planning ... - Transworld Business

This past weekend I had the opportunity to attend a ?Leadership Forward? put on by Half Full at The Gant in Aspen, Colorado. The event, which was co-facilitated by Aron Ralston, of 127 Hours fame, at this amazing venue, brought together a diverse group of executives including several representatives from the snowboard industry, Unity?s James Binette and Neu Production Founder John Roderick.

Half Full Owner Rebecca Twitchell calls the events ?Forwards? versus ?Retreats? as they?re all about moving, well, forward in your leadership abilities, vision, mission, and strategic planning. While the age old debate over whether leadership can be taught rages on, the fact is that having the tools to set a sturdy course of action and develop and stay focused on a coherent strategy is paramount to successfully running a business, and even a life.

With an intimate group of? attendees, including Mario, a 16 year-old Glenwood Springs sophomore who is in the process of getting a prosthetic arm similar to Ralston?s, we focused on creating a strategy for our individual businesses and developing ways to overcome the obstacles to achieve them in a way that anyone in the industry can relate to - by getting gnarly. After a day in the classroom we headed to Independence Pass to work the metaphor of leadership into rock climbing with Ralston. A far cry from the clich? trust falls of many retreats, moving forward up the rocks shone a spotlight on the necessity of teamwork, trust, and following through to achieve your goals.

The biggest lessons of the weekend for my business were realizing just how important it is to remove yourself from the day-to-day routine and step back and take the long view of where you, your team, and your brand are heading. It?s far too easy to get caught up in the business of running your business, and lose sight of where you?re running it. Without course corrections, you often wind up heading where you originally intended, but that location, as a goal, has changed over time, leaving you in entirely the wrong spot.

That said, strategic planning can often be a daunting task for organizations without solid tools for breaking down a huge process into manageable pieces, evaluating the soundness of each, and moving forward in a way that sets measurable short, medium, and long term goals. The Forward was a great opportunity to step back and take a look at our brand?s direction, an absolutely necessary task in the current economic playground, and take a closer look at whether our current strategy makes sense and will get us where we need to be.

For more information on attending a future Forward, go to Half Full.

Covering Assets With Fitness Insurance | Athletic Trainer

Fitness insurance can cover a wide array of areas having to do with the fitness world. These policies cover anything from group fitness instructors, mind-body and yoga teachers and personal trainers to fitness centers, health clubs, gyms and studios. There may also be other insurance policies to cover areas in fitness and wellness such as dance instructors, life coaches, martial arts, Pilates teachers and reiki practitioners. Equipment used in wellness activities can also be insured. In this area, it is very important to find coverage tailored specifically for the fitness industry.

For instance, a health club offering yoga classes may want to look into coverage for its instructors. A basic package may offer ,000,000 for each occurrence and a ,000,000 aggregate limit. One should also consider a miscellaneous professional liability policy to protect against any bodily injury because of either performing or not performing services. As a professional, a yoga instructor should also look into personal injury liability coverage for protection against lawsuits that involve libel, slander or wrongful invasion of privacy and possibly even sexual abuse liability coverage.

A fitness insurance policy covering the whole health club will involve many of the same types of policies as found with those in a yoga package but to different extents. A health club package can include activities and areas of a building including courts, group exercise, Jacuzzi, suntan booths, swimming, weightlifting and whirlpool among others. In some states, it may also be possible to include building and personal property or home liability coverage as well as a policy that covers both renter and landlord of a rented facility.

There are also policies tailored for personal trainers that help them build a basic business strategy as well as keep an image as ethical, professional and serious. Like yoga instructors, personal trainers need personal injury liability to protect against lawsuits that threaten their reputations. However, coverage may need to extend beyond health club facilities to include all locations including clients? homes. In this case, liability and trip and fall coverage is essential for those who offer training services including athletic trainers and sports conditioning professionals.

Fitness insurance can also cover a wide range of other areas including bonds, employment practices liability, general liability in areas including professional liability and tanning, property, umbrellas and worker?s compensation. One may work with an agent or broker that is familiar with insurance targeted toward the fitness industry in order to find the best policy possible that covers all needs whether working for a health club or as an individual instructor or trainer. It is important in this industry to protect one?s reputation as well as assets to maintain a successful presence in the world of fitness and wellness.

REUTERS: Please Stop Reading Business Insider And Start ...

This year, fellow employees, we have one mission: Crush Business Insider.

Well, for the second time in a week, the global financial and news behemoth Reuters has attacked us.

Why a company with 50,000 employees, $13 billion of revenue, $1+ billion of annual profits, and a $25 billion market cap feels the need to obsessively hammer away at a tiny startup is beyond us.

But there they go again.

In fact, given the frequency and passion with which one of Reuters most high-profile and expensive columnists trashes every little thing that we do, we can only assume that the corporate powers-that-be at Reuters have made this part of his mission statement.

And that's flattering, we guess. In a way.? We suppose that, on some level, we should thank Reuters. If we were members of the reading public, and we saw a huge global duopolist devoting so much of its time and energy to telling us NOT to read something, we would certainly develop a stronger desire to read it.

CEO Tom Glocer is a great guy. We can only hope he doesn't know anything about this.

But, still, we have a couple of questions for Reuters.

First, don't you have anything better to do?

Second, why don't you pick on someone your own size?

Like Bloomberg, for example. The other colossal global duopolist. That gorgeous, hungry, butt-kicking financial news and information behemoth across town that is absolutely cleaning your clock.

There's a lot to be written and said about Bloomberg, which?while Reuters was snoozing?has rapidly become one of the richest and most-powerful media and information companies in the world.

If we were you, Reuters, that's where we'd be focusing our energies?on slowing the Bloomberg juggernaut.

Not on trying to nitpick some tiny startup to death.

Santo Politi On Investing: You Can Lose Your Mind Out There ...

The daunting task of picking the winners and losers among start-ups, and the pressure to make money and return it to investors is enough to make even the most seasoned investors crack up, according to Spark Capital Founder and General Partner Santo Politi.

?You can lose your mind out there,? Politi told attendees of the 2011 Dow Jones Private Equity Analyst Conference at the Waldorf Astoria, noting that the goal of many VC investors is to find at least one company that can be sold for ?20x? and return a fund.

Spark is no stranger to those types of deals. The firm was an early backer of online-advertising start-up Admeld which agreed in June to be sold to Google in a deal reported to be worth roughly $400 million. (Though that deal has been waylayed by the DOJ.) The firm is also an investor in Web highflier Twitter.

Politi pointed out that much of a venture capitalist job is ?predicting the future.? But the key, at least when it comes to investing in social media, is finding companies that have bridged the divide between real world interests and the web. He cited Groupon as one successful example. ?Everyone loves a sale,? said Politi. ?They found a way to close that gap from the physical to the digital.?

Start-ups and Web 2.0 businesses have come a long way since even the mid-2000s, said Politi, noting that Facebook and Zynga were more heavily focused on monetization than their predecessors like MySpace and Friendster, and their mass appeal was drawing advertising dollars away from other media outlets.

As for Spark?s portfolio, Politi said he?s most excited about Foursquare. He said Spark had tracked the business since its debut at South by Southwest a few years ago and while it was outbid in the first two funding rounds, it watched closely and came in an as an investor in the company?s $50 million Series B round in June, which valued the start-up at $600 million, The Wall Street Journal reported at the time.

?When you believe a company has enormous potential, it?s okay not to be price sensitive,? said Politi.
