Tim Pawlenty on Same-Sex Marriage vs Traditional Marriage ...

Tim Pawlenty for PresidentRepublican candidate for President Tim Pawlenty sat down with CNN?s Candy Crowley to discuss a number of issues Sunday ? including the comeback of the mullet ? but I?m certain none will have the legs of their conversation on the issue of same-sex marriage. ?The MSM loves to paint the Right as the unsympathetic mass that opposes happiness for all in the name of preserving the institution of man and woman as between a man and a woman. ?I?ve stated very clearly that I believe the matter to be a state issue; or a personal one. ?Accordingly, while I share some of Pawlenty?s opinions on the matter, I believe it to be an issue of zero import in a presidential election as a central issue.

That said, the Left and the MSM will insist on making it one, so here you go. ?Pawlenty?s position on same-sex marriage.

I grabbed a few of the high-points from the interview and have transcribed them below. ?Forgive me for not posting Candy?s questions. ?If you need them for context, watch the video below?

?I think we have a longstanding practice ? it?s social, it?s legal, it?s cultural? that says a man and a woman are joined together for obvious reasons: in relationship, in marriage, in procreation; in raising children,?in their function in society. ?And I?m not at the point, nor will I ever be at the point, where I?m going to say ? you know what ? that?s not really special or any different than any other domestic relationships we can imagine or assemble. ?I don?t buy that at all.?

?I think when society devalues traditional marriage by saying all other domestic relationships are the same as traditional marriage you then?dilute?and devalue traditional marriage.?

?It?s certainly a social and cultural, and moral issue, but it also has practical effects. ?I think obviously a man and a woman together are the traditional family. ?That?s how children are born and raised ? traditionally.?

?There are many examples of single parents and others who have heroically and lovingly raised children? I?m not saying that there can?t be single parents??I?m just saying that we want to maintain traditional marriage; elevate it in the eyes of the law; and in our society it is not the same as domestic relationships.?

'Breaking Dawn' Characters Wrestling With 'Adult Concerns'

Director Bill Condon tells Comic-Con crowd that Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson's real-life growth parallels Bella and Edward.

SAN DIEGO — Bill Condon was tasked with the difficult job of wrapping up the final two installments of "The Twilight Saga." But judging by the glowing response to two brand-new "Breaking Dawn" clips at San Diego Comic-Con, so far it seems safe to bet he's done a great job.

But for the director, the task was as much about creating a finale that will please fans as it was making something that he could be proud of. During Thursday afternoon's (July 21) "Breaking Dawn" panel in the Convention Center's Hall H, Condon called the event "the most incredible test screening I will ever have," because it was the first time he would be hearing fans' reactions to part one of the last two "Twilight" movies.

"It's amazing in this movie how much happens," Condon told the Comic-Con audience. "Bella's getting married or Bella's going to make love for the first time. People have been waiting for these moments, and everyone's imagined them, so you do want to get to the essence of what people might want but you can only do it the way, ultimately, you think is the most beautiful or the most powerful."

"Twilight" fans' possible reactions to a few scenes in particular have Condon feeling nervous, he admitted. "There are big scenes — the childbirth — that you just want to make sure that it's as powerful and as complete as it could be," he said.

It helps that his two stars, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, have come into their own as actors over the course of the movies. Condon called Stewart "the real deal," while revealing that Pattinson was able to bring "more of himself" to the role of Edward Cullen in "Breaking Dawn" then he had in the previous installments.

"They're growing up. There was a year gap between the making of this movie and the last one, ['Eclipse'], so they're just a lot more comfortable in themselves," Condon explained. "I keep saying it's like 'Twilight Grows Up.' It's adult concerns: they're married now, it's like they're going to have a kid, it's that kind of stuff. You could see that it's connecting more to what their lives were like now than if they were still playing high school kids, because they're not high school kids anymore."

BlackRock profit rises with assets, tops estimates (Reuters)

BOSTON (Reuters) ? BlackRock Inc (BLK.N), the world's largest money manager by assets, marshaled a rapidly growing list of fund styles and asset classes to post a 43 percent jump in second-quarter profit, topping expectations.

The New York-based company has long been known as a fixed-income institutional manager, but CEO Laurence Fink has pressed into new areas such as exchange traded funds and multi-asset products -- areas that took in healthy inflows of cash from investors in the latest quarter.

For the three months ended June 30, net income rose to $619 million, or $3.21 per share, from $432 million, or $2.21 a share, a year earlier, BlackRock reported on Wednesday.

Adjusted earnings were $3.00 a share, topping analysts' average forecast of $2.88, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Assets under management were $3.659 trillion at June 30, up 16 percent from a year earlier and up 0.3 percent from the end of the first quarter.

Analysts attributed the gains to BlackRock's wide range of products, which allowed it to grow despite volatile markets.

"This is a company that I would expect to continue to hit singles and doubles," said Calyon Securities analyst Chris Spahr, using a baseball analogy. "There are not going to be many swings and misses because they're so big, and that's a good thing."

BlackRock shares were up 2.75 percent to $188.75 in premarket trading.

NO LONGER JUST ABOUT FLOWS

In a note to investors, Ticonderoga Securities analyst Douglas Sipkin wrote that BlackRock's scale means it is not as dependent on inflows of cash as its smaller rivals.

"BLK is no longer a play on flow momentum, although we do believe organic growth trends will head higher throughout the year," he wrote.

Investors added a net $18.4 billion to BlackRock's long-term funds during the second quarter, excluding outflows in money funds, some specialized portfolios and merger-related outflows.

As at other fund companies, volatile markets during the quarter meant BlackRock faced both market depreciation and net redemptions from some stock funds. Outflows from its active equity products totaled $8.9 billion.

But investors added money in most other areas. BlackRock's popular iShares exchange traded funds took in $11.6 billion, up 11 percent from the first quarter. Investors added $20.7 billion to its multi-asset class products, which BlackRock said reflected strong demand for fiduciary management and asset allocation products.

GROWTH STRATEGIES

In a statement, Fink said the results showed his emphasis on new areas was paying off.

"We continue to execute on our growth strategies," the chief executive said, adding that the results "attest to the strength of BlackRock's business model and our unique franchise."

New Fitness Facility to Open in the Site of the UPMC Hamot ...

ExerciseUPMC Hamot announced last week that a new fitness facility, Erie Health and Fitness Club, will open on August 1, in the current UPMC Hamot Wellness Center location.

UPMC Hamot announced last month that they would be closing the UPMC Hamot Wellness Center effective July 31, but have been working to transition the Wellness Center so that its members could maintain access to the downtown fitness facility.

?At UPMC Hamot, we are committed to providing the highest quality patient care, in addition to supporting community health and wellness programs,? said Jim Fiorenzo, UPMC Hamot Chief Operating Officer. ?Erie Health and Fitness Club will offer members the expertise, commitment, and skills required of an exceptional health and fitness program.?

Anthony Pribonic, Erie Health and Fitness Club president, said that he and his business partner and brother, Matt Pribonic, are excited about opening a facility in downtown Erie and will be working with UPMC Hamot to transition the Wellness Center to become Erie Health and Fitness Club.

?We also are looking forward to meeting and working with Wellness Center members to help them achieve their health and fitness goals,? Pribonic said.

The brothers also own iRock Fitness located at 1541 West Eighth Street.

?Erie Health and Fitness Club will be different than iRock Fitness. It will offer traditional fitness facility programs, such as Silver Sneakers, as well as introduce new services and classes,? said Matt Pribonic.

Although Erie Health and Fitness Club officially opens August 1, the Pribonic?s aren?t wasting any time.

?We will be getting in there right away, meeting the members and staff, and letting them know that downtown Erie will have a new and incredible workout facility,? stated Anthony Pribonic.

PlayStation Store, Qriocity returning to Japan this week, completing global PSN restoration

Sony's 'Welcome Back' campaign may have drawn to a close a bit early, but the PlayStation Network won't make its full return to Japan until later this week. As of July 6th, Japanese gamers will once again be able to access the PlayStation Store and Qriocity, bringing an end to a nearly three-month suspension enacted after April's widespread data breach. These services have already been reintroduced across other parts of the globe, but Sony encountered notably stiffer resistance in its homeland, where authorities demanded assurance of the PSN's security before allowing it to relaunch within their borders. The PlayStation Store remained down throughout Sony's negotiations with government officials, but company spokesman Satoshi Fukuoka says those discussions have advanced far enough for full services to resume. The PSN's long-awaited return to Japan will also signal its full global restoration, meaning that Sony may finally be able to put the saga to rest -- and try to forget about that $170 million it lost in the process.
