NEW YORK (AP) ? Keeping things quick in 90-degree heat, defending U.S. Open champion Novak Djokovic wrapped up another easy victory to reach the third round, beating 112th-ranked Rogerio Dutra Silva of Brazil 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 Friday.
Djokovic didn't face any break points and finished with more than twice as many winners, 29, as unforced errors, 14. He needed a little more than 90 minutes to make sure he would keep intact his record of never having lost to a player ranked outside the top 100 at a major tournament.
The second-seeded Serb has dropped a total of seven games through two matches this year at Flushing Meadows.
Dutra Silva never has reached the third round at a Grand Slam tournament.

Canadians have had fairly limited options for LTE-based 4G if they didn't want to turn to the three main carrier brands: they could go to a Bell-owned Virgin Mobile, and that's it. While there isn't a truly independent LTE carrier yet, Rogers' lower-cost Fido label has just taken its promised LTE access live to at least offer some competition among the smaller names in the field. Calgary, Montreal, Ottawa, St. John's, Toronto and Vancouver can immediately hop on the network at speeds of up to 100Mbps. Bring-your-own-device users don't have to pay a premium to get the faster speeds, although there's currently little choice in hardware if you want to buy straight from the source: the lone LTE device on offer is Sierra Wireless' AirCard 763S hotspot, which costs $50 on a two-year contract. The flexible rate data-only plan also isn't the greatest deal, starting at $22 for a gone-in-five-minutes 100MB per month to $92 for 9GB. All the same, light data users in the True North will be glad to know they don't have to be relegated to 3G to save a few dollars.

PHOENIX (Reuters) - An Arizona drifter who skinned a cat and wore its tail and innards around his neck was sentenced to two years in prison on Wednesday.
An Arizona Superior Court judge also sentenced Russell Christopher Hofstad, 25, to four years probation on his release, the Maricopa County Attorney's office said.
Hofstad pleaded no contest last month to a felony animal cruelty charge and guilty to a burglary charge. According to the criminal complaint, police arrested Hofstad in January after he broke into a Phoenix warehouse used as a music venue.
Officers found the skinned and gutted remains of a cat inside, and Hofstad wearing the cat's tail and a piece of its "internals" around his neck on a rope. Some of the cat's other internal organs were kept in a cooler.
Hofstad told police he had recently been released from jail and had nowhere to live. He said he had not eaten in a few days, so he hit the cat with a stick and then stabbed it.
He planned to stuff the animal and save the skeleton "for a decoration for a party."

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) ? Officials say 22 people have been rescued from a boat overloaded with about 150 asylum seekers that sank off Indonesia, and more survivors have been spotted.
The boat sank Wednesday on its way from the main Indonesian island of Java to Australia. A merchant ship rescued six Afghan men early Thursday.
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority said in a statement that an Australian navy patrol boat has retrieved another 16 survivors. An aircraft crew spotted more survivors in the water.
Another three merchant vessels had joined the search.

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) ? The rustic tent cabins of Yosemite National Park ? a favorite among families looking to rough it in one of the nation's most majestic settings ? have become the scene of a public health crisis after two visitors died from a rodent-borne disease following overnight stays.
On Tuesday, park officials sent letters and emails to 1,700 visitors who stayed in some of the dwellings in June, July and August, warning them that they may have been exposed to the disease that also caused two other people to fall ill.
Those four people contracted hantavirus pulmonary syndrome after spending time in one of the 91 "Signature Tent Cabins" at Curry Village around the same time in June. The illness is spread by contact with rodent feces, urine and saliva, or by inhaling exposed airborne particles.
After the first death, the park sanitized the cabins and alerted the public through the media that the cause might have been diseased mice in the park.
However, officials did not know for sure the death was linked to Yosemite or the campsite until the Centers for Disease Control determined over the weekend that a second visitor, a resident of Pennsylvania, also had died.
After every park tragedy, officials stress that Yosemite is a wilderness area and with it come some dangers.
"We're very concerned about visitors and employees," park spokesman Scott Gediman said. "But we feel we are taking proactive steps in both cleaning the affected areas and in public education. But it's absolutely impossible to eliminate all risk."
On Sunday night, health officials with the National Park Service sent out an alert asking public health authorities to be on the watch for more potential rodent-related cases of acute respiratory failure.
Yosemite receives 4 million tourists a year from around the world, and national park officials were trying to determine if the warning should be expanded to include foreign countries.
"We're discussing whether to do that and how to do that," said Dr. David Wong, chief of the epidemiology branch of the National Park Service Office of Public Health.
The disease can incubate for up to six weeks before flu-like symptoms develop. It's fatal in 30 percent of all cases, and there is no specific treatment. It is not spread human-to-human.
Wong said the Yosemite cases are unusual because hantavirus illnesses are most often isolated events.
"We are seeing more than one person who got it in a narrow space and time," he said. "It makes us wonder why, and those are questions we don't have the answers to."
All the victims stayed in the cabins between June 10 and June 20, and all four known cases were contracted by people who stayed within 100 feet of each other but not necessarily in the same cabins.
The National Park Service currently has assigned two epidemiologists to work in the park trapping rodents for testing. Additional studies are being done to determine if the Yosemite rodent population is higher than normal after a record snowpack in 2011 provided ample water for the grass seeds mice favor.
"Rodents and mice are native to the park, but we are looking at the populations and working with our wildlife biologists to determine if the population is too high," Gediman said. "There are rodents here, and we could never trap them all so that's not going to mitigate it."
As the Labor Day weekend approaches, some people have cancelled reservations at Curry Village after hearing about the outbreak, Gediman said.
The camp sits at the base of the 3,000-foot Glacier Point.
After boulders rained down in 2008, the park permanently closed some cabins. The newer, insulated Signature Cabins were built in 2009 to replace them. Investigators are trying to determine why those cabins were involved in the outbreak.
Park concessionaire Delaware North Co., which oversees the cabins, did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment.
Rangers are handing out information brochures at the park entrance warning people to avoid mice in general and mouse droppings in particular.
People with reservations in the affected cabins are not being notified before arrival, but they are being warned during check-in to report any sightings of mouse feces.
"This is a serious public health issue and we want to be transparent, but at the same time we don't want people to alter their plans, because we are taking the necessary precautions," Gediman said.
Since the first illness was reported earlier this month, employees of Delaware North disinfected all 408 canvas-sided and wood-sided cabins in Curry Village. Workers are in the midst of shoring up the cabins in an attempt to keep mice from have easy access.
Epidemiologists say none of the victims had anything in common other than staying in Yosemite cabins.
A 37-year-old man from the San Francisco Bay area was the first person to die. Further details have not been released because of medical privacy laws.
Of the 587 documented U.S. cases since the virus was identified in 1993, about one-third proved fatal.
Deer mice were determined to be the main carriers of the virus, though other rodents can be infected, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Most of the cases occur in the West, though researchers are not sure why.
This year's deaths mark the first such fatalities of park visitors, although two others were stricken in a more remote area of the park in 2000 and 2010.
There have been at least two other fatal cases in national parks in the past few years, including a deputy superintendent at Glacier National Park who died in 2004, and a tourist at the Grand Canyon who was stricken in 2009.
Wong said health officials never were able to determine whether the victims contracted hantavirus inside the park grounds.

This is a sad story from The Canadian Press:
Police say a man who died from an ?alleged sucker? punch outside a Calgary bar had been in an argument over the Toronto Blue Jays? pitching staff moments before he was struck. Brian Ludwig, a 41-year-old father, died in the hospital after the fight early Sunday morning following a charity golf tournament. Ludwig had been at the pub as part of the fundraiser.
Staff Sgt. Doug Andrus told the Calgary Herald that the fight, which took place in the parking lot, ?was in regards to pitchers on the Blue Jays? and Ludwig died of blunt force trauma.
Scott Robert Hooser is accused of throwing the punch that killed Ludwig and the 27-year-old (pictured above) has been charged with manslaughter.

Taliban insurgents beheaded 17 people at a party in southern Afghanistan on Sunday night. The attack may have been part of a power struggle between rival factions, but one government official said the attack was intended to punish the attendees for listening to music and dancing. Are music and dance prohibited in Islam?
It?s debatable. The Prophet Mohammed made a series of seemingly contradictory statements about the performing arts, providing ammunition for people on either side of this doctrinal dispute. According to some accounts Mohammed promised that Allah would turn musicians into ?monkeys and pigs.? On special occasions, however, the Prophet seems to have enjoyed a little music. These ambiguities have led to divisions within Islam over the status of music and dancing. One split is sectarian in nature: Fundamentalist Salafists and Wahhabis generally view music and dancing as haram, or forbidden, while moderate believers accept them as halal. Mystical Sufis are the most dedicated dancers in the Muslim world, embracing whirling and other trance-like movements as a way to grow closer to Allah. Another division is based on class. Urban elites have historically refrained from dancing, viewing it as frivolous and beneath their dignity. The rural Muslims who account for the majority of the faithful, however, have developed rich dance traditions.
Until approximately 30 years ago, dancing was de rigueur at rural Muslim weddings around the world. In Afghanistan, for example, Pashtun men have traditionally circled up to perform the attan. At other gatherings, martial dances are traditional. Stick-wielding Yemeni villagers dance the shabwani, while men in the United Arab Emirates grasp one another?s waists to simulate combat in the razfa. There are also exclusively female dances in the Muslim world, like the stamping muradah traditional in Qatar, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia, and couples dances, such as the flowing sharh of Yemen.
Anti-dance sentiment surged in the 1980s, as Saudi Arabian elites began to aggressively export Wahhabism. Saudi investors have bought the contracts of well-known Egyptian belly dancers, paying them to recite Quranic verses rather than swivel their hips on television. (Belly dancing appears to be a pre-Islamic art form that has survived in more secular countries such as Egypt and Turkey.) Taliban militants have banned dancing at wedding parties, although some observers believe the move has more to do with stamping out tribal traditions than doctrinal objections to dancing itself.
While moderate Muslims generally don?t object to music and dancing per se, a large portion of the faithful view sexually suggestive movement, racy lyrics, and unmarried couples dancing together as haram, because they may lead to un-Islamic behavior. This viewpoint resembles the anti-dance feeling common among American Christians at various points in U.S. history. The Puritan minister Cotton Mather wrote in the 17th century that dancing was a creation of the devil, and warned that a ?CHRISTIAN OUGHT NOT TO BE AT A BALL? [capitalization from original]. In the early 20th century, a new generation of pamphleteers railed against dance. Consider the 1909 tome The Christian and Amusements, by Presbyterian evangelist William Edward Biederwolf. Just as today?s Saudi fundamentalists blame pre-Islamic cultures for belly dancing, Biederwolf claimed that ?the mingling of the sexes in dancing originated in Greece among men of contaminated morals and women of loose, questionable character.? The evangelist terrified his readers with tales of upstanding young men who, after attending a community dance, experienced ?thoughts and imaginations which no pure-minded, chaste-hearted young man should ever indulge.? Police statistics, he claimed, demonstrate how many young ladies attributed their undoing to the evils of dancing.

Samsung's Galaxy Camera may not be the first Android-powered camera on the market (Nikon's S800c was announced last week), but Samsung takes?the concept even further, with a 4G cellular connection and a rear panel that's indistinguishable from a phone's.
Rumors of the cam-phone?began circulating earlier this week, but the device itself was not announced until Wednesday, during?Samsung's press event at the IFA tech trade show in Berlin. It's very much a camera with phone features, though, not vice versa ? unlike photography-ready but phone-first devices like?the iPhone 4S and Nokia Pureview 808.
The camera portion consists of a surprisingly long 21x zoom that is a?fairly bright F/2.8 at wide angle, has?a contoured grip, and a combined shutter button and zoom rocker. There's a 16-megapixel 2/3-inch?sensor taking the pictures, which is about standard for a point-and-shoot.?The design is appealingly minimal, and this is emphasized by the fact that the rear panel has no buttons at all ? like a number of Android phones, all the controls are on the screen.
That phone portion acts more or less like a regular high-powered smartphone, sharing many aspects with Samsung's flagship?Galaxy S III: a 4.8-inch 720p?screen, 1.4?GHz processor and GPS, among other things.
Of course you can download "Angry Birds," check your email, and all that, but Samsung has also included a robust camera app with a number of non-standard features. You can change exposure settings,?select interesting photo modes, preview effects,?and edit your shots all using the touchscreen.
Not only that, but the Galaxy Camera will take a SIM card and connect to a cell network as well as to?Wi-Fi (there are 3G and 4G versions). That means you can easily upload your photos to sites like Flickr and Instagram, and it can be configured to automatically back up your shots to a Samsung or Google cloud storage service. Storage on the phone will be?on Micro SD, which means up to 32GB.
The device should be available later this year, and while Samsung didn't talk price, the company said the device will be available from?mobile operators.?This suggests that, like high-end smartphones, the Galaxy Camera will be subsidized by carriers and may require a contract. Considering the Galaxy S III goes for around $500 without an expensive zoom lens, the full cost will likely be at least that.

As an editor I am asked by authors...What are my options for publishing my book?
While I can't tell them the best option, I can give them choices.
You can sell your manuscript to a publishing house. Definitely check with publishing houses before you sign anything. Typically the royalty is around 8%. If your main objective is to have a book to use in your promotion or to showcase you as a guru in your field, this is probably the way to go for you.
You can self publish your manuscript as a paperback book. You will make around 50% profit margin, give or take a little. Let's say you are a professional speaker or you give talks about your business. This would be the way to go for you. This type of book costs less so you can give it away or offer deals on the book at your speaking engagements.
You can self publish your manuscript as an eBook. Potentially this has the ability for the most profit for you. Why? You can sell it on your own web site as a downloadable PDF and your profit margin is almost 100%.
Keep in mind; you can publish your book in more than one of these ways. Plus, you can publish one eBook and the next book you write could be sold to a publishing house.?Source: http://vhws.blogspot.com/2012/08/book-publishing-options.html

This timely volume discusses the much debated and controversial subject of the presence of religion in the public sphere. The book is divided in three sections. In the first the public/private distinction is studied mainly from a theoretical point of view, through the contributions of lawyers, philosophers and sociologists. In the following sections their proposals are tested through the analysis of two case studies, religious dress codes and places of worship. These sections include discussions on some of the most controversial recent cases from around Europe with contributions from some of the leading experts in the area of law and religion.
Covering a range of very different European countries including Turkey, the UK, Italy and Bulgaria, the book uses comparative case studies to illustrate how practice varies significantly even within Europe. It reveals how familiarization with religious and philosophical diversity in Europe should lead to the modification of legal frameworks historically designed to accommodate majority religions. This in turn should give rise to recognition of new groups and communities and eventually, a more adequate response to the plurality of religions and beliefs in European society.

BOGOTA (Reuters) - Colombia's government is seeking peace with the country's biggest rebel group, the FARC, and could consider also holding talks with a second guerrilla movement to end five decades of war, President Juan Manuel Santos said on Monday.
In a televised address from the presidential palace, Santos said his government would learn from the mistakes of so many previous leaders who tried but failed to clinch a lasting ceasefire with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.
"Since the first day of my government I have completed my constitutional obligation to find peace. With that aim, we have had exploratory conversations with the FARC to seek an end to the conflict," he said, confirming weeks of swirling rumors that his government had started behind-the-scenes discussions.
He added that the military would continue its operations "throughout every centimeter" of Colombia while talks continued.
Santos did not provide further details, but said he would reveal more about the talks in the coming days.
A successful peace agreement with the rebels would secure him a place in history as the leader who ended a conflict that has killed tens of thousands over the years and left the Andean nation's reputation in tatters.
In response to a Reuters interview published on Monday with the head of the nation's second biggest rebel group, Santos said the National Liberation Army, known as the ELN, could also be involved in the peace talks.
"Today the ELN has expressed, via an international news agency, its interest in participating in conversations to put an end to the violence," the president said in his brief speech.
"I tell that group that, within the same framework, they too can be part of the effort to end the conflict."
A Colombian intelligence source told Reuters earlier that as part of the deal to hold talks, Santos had agreed FARC rebels would not be extradited to any other country to stand trial.
Details are still being worked out, the source said, but the negotiations could take place in Cuba or Norway. U.S. President Barack Obama is aware of the process and is in agreement, the source said.
Santos, who is at the mid-point of his four-year term, has said he would consider peace talks with the FARC only if he was certain the drug-funded group would negotiate in good faith.
SANTOS FOCUSED
The last peace effort ended in shambles.
In 1988 former President Andres Pastrana ceded the FARC a safe haven the size of Switzerland to promote talks. The rebels took advantage of the breathing space to train fighters, build more than 25 airstrips to fly drug shipments, and set up prison camps to hold its hostages.
News of the latest peace effort was met with guarded hope among Colombians.
"Honestly, full peace is probably never possible. Of course it would be good ... but really, an end to the war? I think an end to the world will happen first," said Maria Eugenia Martinez as she sold cigarettes in an upscale Bogota neighborhood.
Santos discussed the peace process during talks in Havana with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Cuba's former leader Fidel Castro before the Summit of the Americas in Cartagena, Colombia earlier this year, the intelligence source said.
Colombia's congress passed a constitutional reform in June that set the legal basis for eventual peace with the rebels. The reform prohibits guerrilla leaders accused of crimes against humanity from holding political office.
In a recent interview with Reuters, Santos said he would only start a peace process "with a high probability of success. I would not start a process to fail."
VIOLENCE CONTINUES
News of the talks had already angered Santos' predecessor, Alvaro Uribe, who has slammed Santos for wanting "peace at any cost" and allowing the rebels to rearm and regroup.
Santos, a former defense minister, won election in 2010 by a landslide, pledging to cut unemployment and continue Uribe's hard line security policies, while fostering economic growth and reducing poverty.
While much of the world struggles to shore up fiscal accounts, Colombia's financial management, buoyant economy and security advances have helped shield its economy from too much fallout from the international financial crisis.
Once an outcast for most foreign companies, the Andean nation has become a magnet for investment as a U.S.-backed offensive against the FARC sharply reduced the number of kidnappings and murders. The nation was rewarded last year with an investment grade from three major credit-rating agencies.
But the 61-year-old Santos has seen his own ratings slide in recent weeks amid criticism that he had allowed rebels to chip away at the security gains of the last decade.
Attacks on oil industry installations have jumped 40 percent over the last year, while violent clashes between troops and indigenous protesters led to withering criticism of Santos for not protecting the soldiers.
Six people were killed, including two children, in a FARC bomb attack in central Meta province on Sunday.
The FARC, which calls itself "the people's army" defending peasant rights, has battled about a dozen governments since appearing in 1964, when its founder, Manuel Marulanda, and 48 rebels fought off thousands of troops in jungle hide-outs.
The group has faced its biggest set-backs in recent years as U.S.-trained special forces use sophisticated technology and spy networks to track the leaders.
A string of defeats began in 2008 with a cross-border military raid into Ecuador that killed its second in command. Marulanda died of a heart attack weeks later and was replaced by Alfonso Cano, who was later killed too.

Acupuncture defined
Acupuncture involves the insertion of extremely thin needles through your skin at strategic points on your body. A key component of Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture is most commonly used to treat pain.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) explains acupuncture as a technique for balancing the flow of energy or life force ? known as qi or chi (pronounced CHEE) ? believed to flow through pathways (meridians) in your body. By inserting needles into specific points along these meridians, acupuncture practitioners believe that your energy flow will re-balance.

The stage crew works on the teleprompter during final preparations for the Republican National Convention at the Tampa Bay Times Forum on Sunday.
By Michael O'Brien, NBC News
TAMPA, Fla. -- Republicans will convene their convention on Tuesday, squeezing their canceled Monday programming into the span of three days.
Convention organizers seemed not to forsee any additional delays to the convention, though they said they would continue to monitor an impending hurricane.
The new schedule maintains the primetime schedule, with a lineup of Ann Romney and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie speaking on Tuesday evening, former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez and vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan on Wednesday, and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Mitt Romney on Thursday.
Romney strategist Russ Schriefer wouldn't fully rule out the possibility, though, of adding a Friday session to the convention if inclement conditions force further postponement of convention activities.
"We are planning on Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday," he said. "It's a hypothetical question"
Convention organizers argued that Monday's planned theme -- "We Can Do Better" -- could be weaved into the remaining three days of the convention as it's currently scheduled. Some speeches will be shortened to accommodate for the changes.
Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus will call the convention to order on Monday, as had been planned, but will shortly thereafter gavel the convention into recess. Organizers called this a "very, very brief session -- probably no more than five minutes," and expressed doubts about whether many, if any, delegates would attend.
The roll call vote to formally nominate Romney for president is scheduled for Tuesday.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Galaham Zuanich, an investment adviser for Morgan Stanley Smith Barney in Santa Cruz, will be writing a monthly column on personal finance. His column will appear Mondays.
Investing for retirement can be a difficult task. Here are some time-tested strategies that could work for you.
First you have to build and maintain a well-balanced portfolio that is right for your situation. You begin with an asset allocation. Investment assets typically are stocks or equities for growth, bonds or fixed income for income and stability, and cash or money market instruments for short-term cash needs.
Once you have determined how much growth vs. stability vs. short-term needs is right for you, then you should diversify. We have all heard that you shouldn't keep all of your eggs in one basket.
Diversification is the process of spreading your investment across the different asset types. The idea is that you want to protect yourself should a portion of your investments not go according to plan.
How much should you put in to each asset class? One of the best ways to answer this question is to be honest about your current financial situation and attitudes toward risk. Be sure to have enough stability in your portfolio that you can sleep at night. This is what I call the "sleep test." If you are up all night worried about your investments, then your portfolio doesn't pass the sleep test.
You should also consider your age. A younger person
can afford to be more aggressive and be primarily invested in stocks. If you are young, you have the advantage of time. History has shown that stocks outperform bonds and savings accounts. However, there are many wild swings along the way. Raise your hand if you remember the difficulties of 2008.Younger investors can better withstand major market pullbacks because they can wait out the difficult times. Older investors cannot risk their life savings in an effort to get higher returns.
Finally stay on track. Just as you check your vehicle's oil at least twice a year, you too should check your portfolio at least twice a year. You should be looking at your asset allocation mix.
Over time, some assets will increase in value and others will decrease in value. This will throw off your original asset allocation mix. If left unattended, you may find your mix has become too aggressive or perhaps too conservative for your situation. Regular rebalancing involves selling your assets that have appreciated in value and using those funds to purchase assets that have fallen in value.

The VPS can be a server that provides all the very same general features of the committed server. It sites much less needs on you compared to shared internet hosting system does. Even when it expenses a tad a good deal more, it?s a much inexpensive alternate than having to pay for your personal have committed server. Those people, who?d choose VPS, are most likely Linux people trying to find a bigger diploma of customization. Webpages on the VPS system are considerably more unlikely to influence many others in a very unfavourable way, compared with all those on the shared internet hosting approach. With shared web hosting you may be typically restricted to a diploma on your bandwidth, regardless of the the promises say. What we would aspire to consider is really a less costly virtual personal server or VPS. Having a VPS you might have comprehensive handle about your web hosting natural environment. You can actually outline the server practice, the level of memory and in many cases what is often uploaded and just how significantly is usually uploaded. A second gain to possessing a virtual personal server is the fact that your atmosphere is isolated. What this implies is you you shouldn?t guaranteed the house or perhaps the useful resource is with other accounts. If there is certainly an alternate account that requires up a whole lot of means in memory it doesn?t change yours. With the very same token someone else offers a server which has ailments or is afflicted having a virus it might not change your account or your online pages.
